In 18th-century northern Africa, King Aysar rules the Caldifor Kingdom with a brutality so complete that even his shadow inspires fear. His claim to the throne rests on a sacred twin-pronged scepter—an ancient relic that hums only for the true king. When the revered Oracle of Panfe foresees that a humble village woman will one day give birth to Caldifor’s rightful ruler, Aysar responds with merciless precision. He murders the woman. He murders the Oracle. And with her dying breath, the Oracle makes a final prophecy. “No child of the king’s blood will ever draw breath.”

The prophecy holds true. Due to the king’s frustration, unrest spread throughout the kingdom, particularly in the Panfe Village where the Oracle once lived. And at its center stands a phantom freedom fighter known only as the Mtetezi. When Aysar finally hunts him down, he slaughters the rebel before the eyes of his young son, Lateef, who narrowly escapes into the wilderness.

While searching for the boy, Aysar encounters Neith, a Panfe woman whose sight is fading but whose cooking is so extraordinary that he drags her into palace service. As unrest swells and one of Aysar’s wives finally shows signs of carrying a living heir, tragedy strikes: the pregnant queen dies after drinking poisoned tea. Neith is accused, imprisoned, and marked for execution.

But fate intervenes. A rebellious palace guard and the now grown Lateef orchestrate a daring escape, freeing Neith and a group of Panfe prisoners. Together, they flee more than a thousand kilometers east, “hoping that the great distance would guarantee they would never see Aysar again.”

They are wrong.

When Aysar learns that Neith is the widow of the martyred Mtetezi, his vengeance becomes absolute. Armed with the sacred scepter, he leads his army in relentless pursuit. The refugees find sanctuary in the beautiful Aukmondi Valley under the protection of Mfalme Ncobba and the miraculous healer Khalid, a man whose gifts seem to defy nature itself. Yet even Khalid’s wonders and Ncobba’s warriors cannot halt Aysar’s obsessive vengeance.

When Aysar finally reaches the valley, the Panfe people face the truth they have feared since the Oracle’s death: their dreaded destiny is unavoidable.

After graduating from Little Rock Central High School and studying psychology at the University of Arkansas, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He served for more than twenty-three years in military intelligence. With an associate’s degree in Russian, he completed tours of duty in England, Turkey, Italy, and Japan. He retired from the Air Force in 1995. He later completed a second retirement as a technical writer from an engineering company in Baltimore, Maryland. H.D.
