What does the publishing process look like?
The Outskirts Press publishing process is guided from start to finish and includes submitting your manuscript, selecting publishing services, reviewing proofs, and releasing your book for sale.
After your manuscript is reviewed and accepted, you’ll work with a Publishing Consultant to choose the options that best fit your goals, such as editing, cover design, interior formatting, and illustrations.
Once your publishing package is selected, you’ll be assigned an Author Representative who will guide you through preparing your book’s print files and reviewing your proofs. During production, you’ll have the opportunity to review and approve both your cover and interior files before anything is published.
This step-by-step process is designed to keep you informed and in control at every stage, without rushing decisions. When your final files are approved and pricing is finalized, your book is published and automatically distributed through standard retail, wholesale, and library channels so you can begin promoting it and earning royalties.
If you’d like a clearer picture of what happens at each stage before moving forward, a free consultation can walk you through the process and answer any questions.
Publishing Process Summary

How long will it take for me to get published?
From the time you approve production — after purchasing your publishing package and completing pre-production steps — our goal is to have your book published within approximately 10–13 weeks.
This timeline represents a typical publishing path and can vary depending on the services selected and author response times.
Your timeline may be longer if you choose custom services such as Professional Copyediting, Custom Illustrations, or Custom Interior Formatting. In many cases, self-publishing timelines are also influenced by how quickly authors review proofs and provide approvals, so staying responsive and submitting complete materials helps keep the process moving smoothly.
A sample Outskirts Press publishing timeline may look like:
- Manuscript Accepted: ~1 week
- Pre-Production: ~1 week (author’s discretion)
- Production: ~3–4 weeks (depending on services selected)
- Online Proof Review: ~2 weeks (author’s discretion)
- Publication: ~3–4 weeks
While timelines vary based on the options selected and author response times, some authors have completed the publishing process in as little as 4 weeks when projects are fully prepared and approvals move quickly.
If you have an upcoming deadline or time-sensitive goal, it’s important to let your Publishing Consultant know as early as possible so everyone is aligned and working toward the same timeline. Clear communication up front helps your publishing team recommend the best options and plan accordingly.
For authors who need to move faster, Outskirts Press also offers an optional Expedited Service, which allows your project to move to the front of the production line. This service is designed for authors with firm deadlines and can significantly shorten the overall timeline when combined with prompt author approvals.
Learn more about our Expedited Service and whether it’s a good fit for your project.
If your goal is to begin promoting or collecting interest before your official publication date, Outskirts Press also offers a Pre-Launch Service. This option allows your book to be listed for pre-order on Amazon, enabling readers to place orders in advance while final production is completed.
Pre-launch is especially helpful for authors with planned events, announcements, or coordinated marketing efforts, as it allows you to build momentum and visibility without rushing the production process.
Can I fast track my publishing process?
Yes, in certain situations you can fast track your publishing process by planning ahead and selecting options designed for tighter timelines.
The most important first step is letting your Publishing Consultant know as early as possible if you have a deadline or time-sensitive goal, so everyone is aligned and working toward the same outcome.
Publishing timelines are influenced by the services selected and how quickly authors review and approve materials. Authors who are fully prepared, responsive during proof reviews, and submit complete materials tend to move through the process more quickly.
For authors with firm deadlines, Outskirts Press offers an optional Expedited Service, which allows your project to move to the front of the production line. This service is designed to significantly shorten the overall timeline when combined with prompt author approvals and readiness at each stage.
Learn more about our Expedited Service and whether it’s a good fit for your project.
While there are no guaranteed timeframes, some authors have published in as few as 4 weeks, but a more typical expedited range is 7–10 weeks, depending on the services and options selected.
If your priority is starting promotion or collecting orders before publication rather than shortening production itself, Outskirts Press also offers a Pre-Launch Service. This option allows your book to be listed for pre-order on Amazon, so readers can place orders in advance while final production is completed.
Both options are designed to support authors with specific timing goals, and your Publishing Consultant can help determine the best approach based on your needs.
Do I get to keep the rights to my book?
Yes. You own your book and retain 100% of your rights — Outskirts Press only receives limited licenses needed to publish and distribute your book in the formats you choose.
You keep full ownership of your intellectual property at all times.
The specific license granted to Outskirts Press depends on the publishing formats you select:
- Print (paperback/hardcover): You grant Outskirts Press a non-exclusive, worldwide license to distribute and sell your book in print. You still retain the right to distribute and sell the print version elsewhere.
- eBook (if selected): You grant Outskirts Press an exclusive, worldwide license to distribute and sell your eBook. This exclusivity is required by many digital vendors (such as Amazon, Apple, and Google), which generally do not allow multiple digital versions of the same title on their platforms.
- Audiobook (if selected): You grant Outskirts Press an exclusive, worldwide license to distribute and sell the audiobook. This exclusivity is required by audiobook vendors (such as Audible and Findaway), which generally do not allow multiple audiobook versions of the same title on their platforms.
In addition, you grant Outskirts Press limited non-exclusive permissions to:
- Display excerpts of your book for promotional purposes
- Store and transmit digital files as needed to produce, distribute, and sell your book
These permissions exist solely to support publication and distribution and do not affect your ownership rights. For full details, please review our Publishing Agreement.

Where can I get a book published?
You can get a book published through traditional publishers, do-it-yourself self-publishing platforms, or a full-service self-publishing company.
The best option depends on your goals, timeline, and how much professional support you want during the process.
Common places authors publish books include:
- Traditional publishers: Often require an agent, involve a competitive submission process (only a small percentage of manuscripts accepted), and typically have longer timelines and limited author control.
- DIY self-publishing platforms: Allow authors to publish independently but require the author to handle setup, formatting, design, and production details on their own, which can make it challenging to achieve a fully professional final product without prior publishing experience.
- Full-service self-publishing companies: Provide guided support with editing, cover design, interior formatting, printing, and distribution while allowing authors to retain ownership and control.
Outskirts Press is a full-service self-publishing company that helps authors publish professionally with real expert support throughout the process. If you’d like to explore whether this approach is a good fit for your book, you can compare publishing package or schedule a free consultation to discuss your options.
How do I find publishers for my book?
To find publishers for your book, start by deciding which publishing path best fits your goals — traditional publishing or self-publishing.
Traditional publishers typically have limited openings, often require a literary agent, and may involve long review timelines and competitive selection processes.
Ways authors commonly search for the right publisher include:
- Research publishers that specialize in your genre
- Review submission guidelines and requirements carefully
- Working with a literary agent (most common for traditional publishing)
- Build an author platform through reviews, speaking, social media, or an email list
- Prepare a strong pitch, synopsis, and sample chapters
Outskirts Press helps authors publish professionally and build momentum through expert guidance and wide distribution. If you’d like to explore your publishing options or decide which path makes sense for your goals, you can compare publishing package or schedule a free consultation.
What happens after I submit my manuscript?
After you submit your manuscript, it is reviewed to determine the best next steps, and the depth of that review depends on how you move forward.
Outskirts Press offers a flexible review process so authors can begin with no obligation and still receive meaningful insight as they progress.
Initial Manuscript Review
If you begin with a free manuscript submission, your manuscript is reviewed to confirm that it meets our publishing standards and that it’s a project we can work with. This initial review focuses on overall acceptability and readiness, and it allows you to explore your publishing options without committing to a package.
You’ll also have the opportunity to speak with a Publishing Consultant to discuss your goals, timeline, and potential publishing paths.
Full Editorial & Market Review
If you choose to move forward by purchasing a publishing package — or by placing the $35 publishing deposit (which is applied toward your package if you continue) — your manuscript then receives a full editorial and market-focused review.
This expanded review provides deeper insight into your book’s strengths, positioning, and opportunities in the marketplace.
This detailed evaluation will include:
- Market and competitive analysis
- Target audience insights
- Packaging and positioning considerations
- Commercial potential and marketing considerations
This editorial feedback is yours to keep and provides lasting value — even if you later decide not to continue with publication.
This graduated review process is designed to give you clarity at each stage, without pressure, while ensuring you receive meaningful guidance when you’re ready to move forward.
Do you accept all manuscripts?
In most cases, yes — Outskirts Press accepts a wide range of original manuscripts across many genres.
However, all manuscripts must meet basic legal and content requirements so they can be professionally published and distributed.
A manuscript may not be accepted if it contains material that is:
- Libelous or defamatory
- Pornographic or obscene in nature
- Infringing on another person’s copyrights, trademarks, or other legal rights
These guidelines are in place to protect authors, readers, and distribution partners, and they apply regardless of genre or publishing path.
If you’re unsure whether your manuscript is eligible, you’re welcome to submit it for review or speak with a Publishing Consultant for guidance before moving forward.
How old do I have to be to publish a book?
To publish a book professionally, you generally need to be at least 18 years old to sign a publishing agreement.
There is no age requirement to write a book, but legal contracts must be signed by an adult.
If you are under 18, you may still be able to publish with the involvement of a parent or legal guardian. In these cases, the parent or guardian typically signs the publishing agreement and assumes responsibility for the account and any related payments.
This allows younger authors to publish their work while ensuring the legal requirements of the publishing process are properly met.
While publishing agreements must be signed by an adult, Outskirts Press has helped authors of all ages share their stories. Our youngest published author was 8 years old, with a parent or legal guardian handling the agreement and publishing decisions.
How many words does a book need to be published?
There is no universal word count required to publish a book, because book length depends on genre, trim size, and formatting.
At Outskirts Press, what matters most is the final page count, not the number of words.
In general, we can publish books with a minimum of 18 pages at the time of publication.
If your manuscript is shorter than 18 pages, that’s usually not a problem. Your Author Representative can help you add appropriate front matter or back matter so your book meets the minimum required length while still feeling complete and professional.
Common ways authors add pages include:
- A half-title page and title page
- A copyright page
- An acknowledgements page
- An author bio page
- An about the book / about the author sections (when appropriate)
If you’d like help estimating how long your book will be once it’s formatted, a free consultation can help you understand your options and what to expect.
How long does it take to publish a book?
Publishing timelines vary based on the services selected and how quickly authors review and approve materials, but a typical Outskirts Press publishing timeline is approximately 10–13 weeks from the time production is approved.
This estimate reflects a standard publishing path and may be shorter or longer depending on your project.
Options such as Professional Copyediting, Custom Illustrations, or Custom Interior Formatting can extend the timeline. In many cases, staying responsive during reviews and submitting complete materials promptly helps keep the process moving forward smoothly.
A sample publishing timeline may look like this:
- Manuscript Accepted: ~1 week
- Pre-Production: ~1 week (author’s discretion)
- Production: ~3–4 weeks (depending on services selected)
- Online Proof Review: ~2 weeks (author’s discretion)
- Publication: ~3–4 weeks
If you have specific timing goals or would like help planning your publishing schedule, a free consultation can help you understand your options and set expectations early in the process.
What are the steps to becoming a successful published author?
Becoming a successful published author involves more than publishing a book — it requires preparation, professional presentation, and ongoing effort to reach readers.
The good news is that success is a process, and you don’t have to do it alone.
Key steps many successful authors follow include:
- Finish a strong manuscript: Take time to revise, refine, and polish your book so it delivers a clear, engaging experience for readers.
- Get professional editing (recommended): Editing helps ensure your book is clean, credible, and ready for the marketplace.
- Invest in a marketable cover: Your cover is one of your most important marketing tools and strongly influences whether readers choose your book.
- Use professional interior formatting: Clean formatting improves readability and helps your book meet bookstore and reader expectations.
- Publish in multiple formats: Offering paperback, hardcover, eBook, and audiobook formats (when appropriate) can help you reach a wider audience.
- Write a strong book description (annotation): A clear, compelling description helps retailers and readers quickly understand what your book is about and who it’s for.
- Choose wide distribution: Making your book available through multiple retail and library channels increases visibility and discoverability.
- Market consistently: Long-term success is built through ongoing promotion, reader engagement, reviews, and audience-building over time.
Success looks different for every author, but a thoughtful, professional approach gives your book the best chance to reach its readers. If you’d like guidance on which steps and services make the most sense for your genre and goals, a free consultation can help you plan your path forward.
How much does it cost to self-publish a book—and can I publish for free?
The cost to self-publish a book can range from $0 to several thousand dollars, depending on the publishing path you choose and the level of professional support you want.
Costs are influenced by factors such as editing, cover design, interior formatting, printing, distribution, and marketing.
Common cost ranges authors may see:
- DIY / “free” publishing: $0 upfront, but authors often pay separately for editing, cover design, formatting, and marketing if they want a professional-quality book.
- Low-budget publishing: Often around $200–$1,500, typically covering basic cover design and formatting with limited professional support.
- Professional-quality self-publishing: Often $1,500–$10,000+, depending on the level of editing, custom design, book complexity, and optional services selected.
What’s the cheapest way to publish a book?
The least expensive option is usually a DIY or “free” platform. However, the true cost is often paid in other ways, such as limited distribution, a book that looks less professional, and fewer resources to help you market and sell successfully.
Do I have to pay to publish a book?
Not always. But to publish a book that meets reader and retailer expectations, most authors invest in at least some professional services — especially editing, cover design, and interior formatting.
Can I publish a book with no money?
You can publish with $0 upfront, but this often involves tradeoffs in quality, reach, and long-term opportunity. Books with unprofessional covers or formatting may struggle with sales, reviews, and discoverability, even if they are technically published.
Why do children’s books and illustrated books often cost more?
Children’s books and other illustrated or photo-heavy books often require full-color printing, heavier paper stock, specialized layout, and high-resolution image preparation, which can increase production costs.
Does paperback vs. hardcover change the cost?
Yes. Hardcover editions generally have higher printing costs than paperbacks, which can impact retail pricing and profit margins. The best format choice depends on your goals, book type, and page count.
If you’d like a clearer picture of what publishing your specific book may cost, a free consultation can help you explore options and set expectations before moving forward.
Manuscript Submission & File Requirements
What file type do I need to submit my manuscript?
The easiest and most commonly accepted file type to submit is a Microsoft Word document (.DOC or .DOCX).
Submitting your manuscript in Word allows our team to review it efficiently and prepare it for professional formatting and design.
To help ensure a smooth submission, keep these tips in mind:
- Submit one complete file whenever possible, rather than separate chapter files.
- Make sure your manuscript is the most up-to-date version before uploading.
- If your book includes images, submit them separately as high-resolution .JPG or .PNG files and include them in a clear, organized way.
If you have questions about file types or aren’t sure whether your manuscript is ready to submit, a Publishing Consultant can help guide you before you move forward, schedule a free consultation at any time.
Can I submit a Word document?
Yes. You can submit your manuscript as a Microsoft Word document (.DOC or .DOCX).
In fact, Word is one of the most common and easiest formats to submit for professional publishing.
If your manuscript includes images or special formatting, your Author Representative can guide you on the best way to provide those files so they’re handled correctly during production.
Can I submit my manuscript in Google Docs?
Yes — you can write your manuscript in Google Docs, but for submission you’ll need to download and submit it as a Microsoft Word document (.DOC or .DOCX).
Submitting your manuscript in Word helps prevent formatting issues and allows our team to review, edit, and prepare your book for professional production more efficiently.
To submit your manuscript from Google Docs:
- In Google Docs, go to File > Download
- Select Microsoft Word (.docx)
- Upload your Word file when submitting your manuscript
If you have questions about converting your file or want to confirm everything looks correct before submitting, a Publishing Consultant or Author Representative can help guide you.
Can I submit a PDF manuscript?
Yes, you can submit a PDF manuscript, but in most cases a Microsoft Word document (.DOC or .DOCX) is preferred.
Word files are easier to review, edit, and convert into a professionally formatted book interior.
A PDF may be helpful in certain situations, such as when:
- You want to provide a view-only reference version of your manuscript
- Your book includes fixed-layout elements like tables, diagrams, or special formatting that need to be preserved visually
If you have both versions available, it’s best to submit the Word document first and include the PDF only as a reference if needed. Your Publishing Consultant or Author Representative can advise you on the best approach for your specific project.
Do I need to format my manuscript before submitting?
No. You do not need to professionally format your manuscript before submitting it.
You can submit your manuscript as a clean, readable Microsoft Word document, and our design team will handle the professional formatting during the production process.
What helps most before submitting your manuscript:
- Make sure the text is complete and in the correct order
- Use clear chapter breaks and headings
- Remove unnecessary spacing, tabs, hard returns, or multiple fonts when possible
- Double-check spelling and grammar (professional editing is strongly recommended)
In general, a clean manuscript is far better than an over-formatted one. Simple, consistent formatting helps ensure a smoother and more accurate production process.
What file type do I need for my book cover?
You do not need to design your own book cover to publish with Outskirts Press.
Professional cover design is included with our publishing packages, and our design team creates your cover for you.
If you do have cover artwork you’d like to submit, the most reliable file type for a book cover is a print-ready PDF. PDFs help prevent common printing issues such as blurry images, incorrect sizing, missing bleed, or text that doesn’t print sharply.
If you’re providing your own cover artwork:
- PDF: Best for a print-ready full cover wrap
- JPG or PNG: Acceptable for individual images, but not ideal for final print covers
- TIFF: High-quality image files that may be used in certain cases
If you’re using Outskirts Press cover design services:
- Our designers create your cover based on your genre, audience, and preferences
- You may choose from thousands of professional images from Getty Images, or
- Request a one-of-a-kind custom cover design created specifically for your books
Your final cover size must match your book’s trim size, page count, and binding type. Your Author Representative will handle all technical specifications and guide you through cover review and approval — so you never have to guess or worry about file requirements.
What size should my cover file be?
Your cover file size depends on your book’s trim size, page count, and binding type (paperback or hardcover).
Because spine width is calculated based on page count and paper type, the final cover dimensions must be created specifically for your book.
If you are submitting your own cover file, to avoid sizing issues:
- Wait until your trim size and page count are finalized before creating a full wrap cover
- Follow the exact cover template or specifications provided for your book
- Use high-resolution images (300 dpi recommended) for best print quality
If you are using Outskirts Press cover design services, you don’t need to worry about cover sizing at all. Your design team will handle all technical requirements and provide proofs for your review and approval.
What image resolution do I need for print?
For professional print quality, images should be at least 300 dpi (dots per inch) at the final size they will appear in your book.
This helps prevent blurry, pixelated, or low-quality images in the printed version.
Quick print image guidelines:
- 300 dpi is the standard for professional printing
- Use high-quality original image files whenever possible
- Avoid screenshots or images pulled from the internet, which are often too low resolution
- If an image will print full-page, it must be high resolution at full-page size
If you’re unsure whether your images are print-ready, your Author Representative can help review them and confirm quality before production begins.
Book Formats, Editions & Physical Specs
Do you offer paperbacks, hardbacks, eBooks, audiobooks, and digital download editions?
Yes. Outskirts Press offers multiple publishing formats including paperbacks, hardbacks, eBooks, audiobooks, and digital download editions so you can reach readers in the format they prefer.
Different formats work better for different audiences, which is why many authors choose to publish in more than one format.
Available publishing formats include:
- Paperback
- Hardcover (hardback)
- eBook (available through major platforms such as Kindle, Nook, and Apple Books)
- Audiobook
- WebPDF (digital download edition)
Choosing the right combination of formats depends on your book type, audience, and goals. If you’d like help deciding which formats make the most sense for your project, a free consultation can help you plan your publishing strategy.
Do I need an eBook if I have a paperback?
No, you don’t have to publish an eBook if you have a paperback — but many authors choose to because it can help them reach more readers.
Some readers prefer digital formats, and an eBook can be a convenient way to expand your book’s availability.
An eBook may be a good option if you want:
- Additional sales opportunities across multiple platforms
- A lower-priced option for readers
- A convenient format for mobile or travel reading
Publishing in multiple formats — such as paperback, eBook, and other formats — often gives authors the best chance to meet different reader preferences and expand their reach.
Is an audiobook worth it?
An audiobook can be worth it if your audience enjoys listening and you want to expand your book into a fast-growing format.
Many readers prefer audiobooks for commuting, exercising, or multitasking, which makes audio an effective way to reach listeners who may not read print or eBook editions.
An audiobook is often a strong fit for:
- Nonfiction, business, and self-help books
- Memoirs and inspirational books, where voice and storytelling matter
- Fiction series and high-engagement genres
- Authors who want to increase format reach and discoverability
Whether an audiobook is worth it depends on your goals, timeline, and marketing plans. For many authors, adding audio helps expand visibility and meet readers in the format they prefer.
What is a WebPDF / digital download edition?
A WebPDF (digital download) edition is a downloadable PDF version of your book that readers can purchase and read digitally.
Unlike standard eBook formats, a WebPDF is typically a fixed-layout file that closely matches the appearance of the printed book.
A WebPDF may be a good option if you want:
- A digital format that preserves your book’s layout and design
- A download-friendly option for readers who prefer PDFs
- An additional way to offer your book digitally alongside print or eBook editions
One advantage of the WebPDF format is pricing control. Outskirts Press authors can set and adjust the WebPDF price at any time through their Author Center — starting as low as $5 or higher based on their goals. Pricing can be changed whenever you like, giving you flexibility for promotions, bundles, or special offers.
WebPDF editions work especially well for nonfiction books, workbooks, manuals, and image-heavy layouts where consistent formatting and flexible pricing matter.
What book sizes do you offer?
Outskirts Press offers a wide range of book sizes (also called trim sizes), with availability varying by publishing package and format (paperback, hardcover, or full-color).
Your Author Representative will help you choose a size that fits your book’s content, layout, and goals.
If you’re not sure what size to choose, these general guidelines can help:
Common trim size guidance:
- 6" × 9" is the most common “trade book” size and works well for most fiction and nonfiction projects
- Fiction and poetry are often smaller, such as 5" × 8" or 5.5" × 8.5"
- Nonfiction is often 6" × 9" or larger, depending on charts, images, and layout needs
Children’s book size suggestions:
- 8.5" × 8.5" square format — popular for picture books
- 11" × 8.5" landscape format — ideal for wide illustrations
Hardcover notes:
- Hardcover books generally require a minimum of 18 pages
- Hardcovers may be available as:
- Casebound (cover printed directly on the case)
- Dust-jacketed (hardcover with a full-color wraparound jacket)
For the most current details on trim sizes, bindings, page-count limits, and format availability, refer to the Book Technical Specifications page or speak with your Publishing Consultant for personalized guidance.
What kinds of paper and binding do you offer?
Outskirts Press offers professional paper and binding options designed for retail-quality publishing.
Availability can vary by publishing package and by format (paperback, hardcover, or full-color), and your Author Representative can help you choose the best option for your book.
Paperback binding:
- Paperbacks are perfect bound, the most common binding used by bookstores and libraries.
- Paperbacks must be at least 18 pages at the time of publication
- We do not offer coil binding or saddle-stitch (stapled) binding, as these formats are not suitable for most retail distribution
Hardcover binding:
- Hardcover books are available with select publishing packages (including Ultimate, Basic, and Full-Color)
- Hardcovers must be at least 18 pages at the time of publication
- Available hardcover formats may include:
- Dust-jacket hardcover (hardcover with a full-color wraparound dust jacket)
- Laminated casebound hardcover (full-color cover printed directly on the case with a glossy or matte finish)
Choosing the right binding
- Most authors choose to match their hardcover trim size to their paperback trim size
- Fiction and poetry often work best with dust-jacket hardcovers
- Children’s books typically benefit from laminated casebound hardcovers, since dust jackets can be easily lost or damaged
- Nonfiction and cookbooks may benefit from laminated casebound hardcovers for durability and ease of use
Paper type and binding recommendations depend on your book’s genre, page count, trim size, and intended audience. For complete details on available options, including trim sizes and technical specifications, visit the Book Technical Specifications page, review our Hardback Book Editions, or speak with your Publishing Consultant for personalized guidance.
Do you offer full-color publishing?
Yes. Outskirts Press offers full-color publishing options for books that require color interiors, illustrations, or photo-rich layouts.
Full-color publishing is especially popular for children’s books, photography books, cookbooks, and visually driven nonfiction.
Outskirts Press offers three levels of full-color publishing.
Full-color publishing package options:
All full-color packages include a full-color cover and full-color interior, with 80+ format choices available in high-quality paperback or hardcover.
Popular full-color formats for children’s books
- 8.5" x 8.5" square format
- 11" x 8.5" landscape format
Paper stock:
All Outskirts Press full-color books are printed on 70# matte white paper, which provides excellent color reproduction and readability.
Full-color print quality options
Full-color publishing packages offer two print quality levels:
- Standard Color: Printed on laser printers; more economical and ideal for higher page counts
- Premium Color: Printed on inkjet printers; higher cost but best for detailed, illustrated, or full-bleed pages
Choosing Standard vs. Premium color
- Choose Premium Color if your book is a full-color, full-bleed children’s book and is expected to be under 50 pages at publication
- Choose Standard Color if your book includes color images that are not full bleed, especially for page counts closer to 100 pages, where keeping the retail price lower is important
Most readers will not notice a major difference unless comparing editions side by side, but Premium Color is recommended when illustration quality is critical.
If you’re unsure which full-color package or print quality is best for your book, a free consultation can help you choose the option that fits your goals, timeline, and budget.
Design, Covers & Illustrations
What will my cover look like?
Your book cover is one of the most important marketing elements of your book, and what it looks like depends on your genre and the cover design option you choose.
Outskirts Press offers multiple professional cover design services so you can match the level of customization to your goals and budget.
Cover design options include:
- Included with your package: Customize your cover at no additional cost using professionally designed cover styles included with your package. The number of available styles — and whether they include images — depends on the package you select.
- Professional Custom Book Cover Design (two concepts): Receive two original cover concepts — one based on your written description and one created independently by our professional cover designer.
- Professional Custom Book Cover Design LITE (one concept): Receive one custom cover concept based on your description.
- Professionally Illustrated Artistic Cover (custom illustration): Ideal for books that require original illustration or a truly one-of-a-kind design that cannot be created using stock imagery.
- Submit your own cover files: You may provide your own print-ready cover file, a complete front cover, or a full wraparound cover (front, spine, and back). This option is not available with the Economy Publishing Package.
Regardless of which option you choose, you’ll have the opportunity to review and approve your cover before publication.
What will my interior look like?
Your book’s interior is what readers experience on every page, and its final appearance depends on your genre and the layout and design option you choose.
Outskirts Press offers professional interior layout and design services that allow you to match the level of customization to your goals and budget.
Interior formatting plays a major role in how professional and readable your book feels. Layout needs vary widely by genre — for example, a novel, a cookbook, and a children’s book all require very different interior designs.
Common interior layout elements include:
- Margins, line spacing, and overall readability
- Font and typography choices (body text, headings, subheadings, title pages)
- Chapter numbers, chapter titles, and section dividers
- Headers, footers, and page numbering
- Drop caps and special formatting elements (when appropriate)
- Image placement and image treatment (when applicable)
Interior layout & design options
1) Industry Standard Book Layout & Design (included)
If you don’t have specific formatting preferences, our professional designers will format your book using industry best practices based on your genre, trim size, and content.
This Industry Standard Book Layout & Design is included with every publishing package and creates a clean, professional, bookstore-ready interior.
Industry Standard examples:
2) Enhanced Book Layout & Design (optional upgrade)
Enhanced layout is a good fit if you have a few specific interior design preferences but don’t need to review or control every page.
For example, you may already know:
- The font or typography style you prefer
- How you want chapter pages to look
- Whether you want unique headers, footers, or section dividers
Our designers incorporate your preferences while handling the rest of the layout professionally.
Enhanced layout examples often include:
- Custom chapter openers or section breaks
- Distinctive font pairings
- More stylized headers and footers
- Interiors that more closely match the author’s original manuscript
This option is popular for nonfiction, memoirs, and books where visual tone matters but full customization isn’t required.
Enhanced examples:
3) Custom Book Layout & Design (optional upgrade)
Custom layout is designed for authors with highly specific or complex formatting needs. This option allows for one-on-one collaboration with your professional designer to create a fully custom interior.
Custom layout examples often include:
- Unique designs that vary by chapter or section
- Poetry collections with specialized spacing
- Workbooks with exercises, callouts, or journaling space
- Cookbooks or image-heavy books with complex layouts
This option is ideal when your book’s structure or visual presentation goes beyond standard formatting.
Custom examples:
Regardless of the layout option you choose, you’ll have the opportunity to review and approve your interior proof files before publication, ensuring the final design reflects your vision.
“What an impressive start for the design of the book! I love the choice of font, the graphic elements that resemble a brushstroke used as spacers, and the design for the Part I section as well as the Interview section headings. All perfect!” — Barbara Lehman Smith
Do you offer illustration services? What if I have my own illustrations?
Yes. Outskirts Press offers professional illustration services — and you can also publish using your own illustrations.
Our illustration options are especially popular for children’s books, picture books, and visually driven projects.
If you want illustrations created for your book
Outskirts Press offers original full-color illustration services in 40+ unique styles, with the option to produce illustrations in black and white if needed.
Unlike many publishers, Outskirts Press illustrations are royalty-free, which means:
- You keep 100% of your book royalties
- You do not share earnings with the illustrator
You can explore available styles and choose the look that best fits your book before production begins. View the Outskirts Press Custom Illustration styles.
If you already have your own illustrations
Yes — we can absolutely use your existing artwork to create your book.
For best results:
- Illustrations should be submitted in high-resolution digital format
- We recommend choosing a trim size and orientation (portrait, landscape, or square) that matches your artwork
- Ideally, illustrations should be created at or near the final intended book size so full-page images print clearly and professionally
Your design team will help ensure your illustrations are prepared and placed correctly for print and digital formats.
What is bleed in printing?
In printing, bleed is the extra image or background area that extends beyond the final edge of the page.
Bleed ensures that when a book is trimmed to its final size, artwork or background colors print cleanly to the edge without unwanted white borders.
Bleed is especially important for:
- Full-bleed book covers
- Interior pages with edge-to-edge images or color backgrounds
If bleed isn’t included where needed, small shifts during trimming can leave thin white lines along the edges of the page. Your design team handle bleed requirements automatically, so you don’t need to calculate or adjust bleed yourself.

Availability on Amazon and other retailers occurs automatically through distribution after publication. While placement, pricing, and availability timing are determined by each retailer, your book will be orderable and discoverable through Amazon’s marketplace.
If you’d like to learn more about how distribution works and where your book can be sold, you can review our distribution overview or speak with your Publishing Consultant for additional details.

Can my book be in bookstores?
Yes — bookstores can order your book.
After publication, Outskirts Press distributes print books through major wholesale distributors, making your book orderable by bookstores through standard trade channels.
It’s helpful to keep in mind:
- Bookstores typically decide what to stock based on local demand, customer interest, and sales potential
- Distribution makes your book available to order, but each store independently decides whether to carry or display it
Many authors support bookstore availability through local outreach, events, or targeted promotion. If you’d like guidance on distribution or bookstore strategies, a Publishing Consultant can explain your options.
Can libraries order my book?
Yes. Libraries can order your book.
If your book has a Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN), it can be distributed to libraries through library-focused distributors such as Baker & Taylor.
For digital formats:
- eBooks and audiobooks may also be made available through library and academic distribution channels worldwide
Library purchasing decisions are made by individual libraries based on demand, relevance, and collection needs, but proper distribution ensures your book is discoverable and orderable through standard library systems.
For more details on library availability and distribution options, you can review the Outskirts Press distribution overview or speak with your Publishing Consultant.
Can my book be distributed worldwide?

Print books are distributed through major wholesale networks, and international orders can often be fulfilled through print facilities closer to the buyer, helping reduce shipping time and costs.
For digital formats:
- eBooks and audiobooks can be distributed through hundreds of retail and library channels worldwide, expanding global accessibility
While availability and fulfillment may vary by region and retailer, worldwide distribution ensures your book can be ordered and accessed internationally through established global channels.
For more details about international availability and distribution options, you can review the Outskirts Press distribution overview or speak with your Publishing Consultant.
Do I need Ingram distribution?
In general, yes — Ingram is one of the most important wholesale distribution channels for reaching bookstores, libraries, and many major retailers that order through standard trade systems.
The good news is that when your print book is published with Outskirts Press, it is automatically distributed through major wholesale distributors, including Ingram, along with other large trade channels. You do not need to arrange separate Ingram distribution on your own.
Ingram helps make your book:
- Orderable by bookstores and libraries
- Accessible through standard retail and library ordering systems
- Available to a wide range of domestic and international buyers
Distribution ensures availability, while individual retailers and libraries decide whether to stock or display a title based on demand.

Copyright & Publishing Identity
Do I need an ISBN to publish my book?
Yes, an ISBN is required to publish and distribute a book professionally. An ISBN helps retailers, libraries, and distribution systems identify and track your book in the marketplace.
Outskirts Press provides ISBNs for each format of your book as part of the publishing process, so you don’t have to navigate it alone.
How do I get an ISBN?
You don’t have to get your own ISBN — Outskirts Press handles that for you as part of the publishing process. Your ISBN is assigned during pre-publication so your book can be properly listed and distributed in the formats you choose.
If you want to publish under your own imprint (aka publishing company name) instead of publishing under the Outskirts Press imprint, we offer ISBN acquisition services so that your imprint is listed as the publisher of record for your ISBN(s).
If you have questions about ISBNs or publishing options, you can schedule a free consultation.
Do you provide barcodes?
Yes. Outskirts Press provides the barcode needed for your printed book’s back cover as part of the publishing process. Barcodes help bookstores, retailers, and inventory systems scan and track your book for sales.
What is the difference between an ISBN and a barcode?
An ISBN and a barcode are related, but they are not the same thing. Both are used to help bookstores, retailers, and distribution systems identify and sell your book.
ISBN:
- The official identification number assigned to your book
- Used for distribution, listing, and cataloging
- Required for professional print book distribution
Barcode:
- The scannable code printed on the back cover of a physical book
- Contains the ISBN information in scannable form
- Helps retailers scan and process book sales
In simple terms: the ISBN identifies your book, and the barcode helps retailers scan it at checkout.
Do I need copyright protection before publishing?
No. You do not need to register a copyright before publishing your book. Your work is automatically protected by copyright law as soon as it is created in a fixed form (written or saved digitally).
Many authors choose to officially register their copyright for additional legal documentation, but it is not required to publish.
We offer copyright registration services to authors self-publishing with Outskirts Press.
If you have questions about copyright registration or publishing services, you can schedule a free consultation with a Publishing Consultant.
How do I copyright my book?
Copyright protection begins automatically when you create your work in a fixed form (written or saved digitally). If you want to officially register your copyright, Outskirts Press can handle the copyright registration process for you.
If you have questions about copyright registration or publishing options, you can schedule a free consultation.
Can I publish under my own publishing imprint?
Yes. With our Ultimate Publishing Packages, you have the optional flexibility to publish under your own publishing imprint (publisher name).
To publish under your own imprint, you must submit an ISBN that you acquired independently. Your imprint name (publisher name) must match the imprint name you used when obtaining your ISBN. Outskirts Press also offers ISBN acquisition services to help you acquire your ISBN so that your imprint is listed as the publisher of record.
The Private Label Imprint service fee covers the setup of your imprint name for wholesale distribution through Outskirts Press using the same distribution network.
Please note: Outskirts Press reserves the right to require the Private Label Imprint service if sensitive content is discovered during the manuscript acceptance review.
Publishing Packages & Payments
How much does it cost to publish a book?
The cost to publish a book can range from free to several thousand dollars, depending on the publishing route you choose and the level of quality and support you want.
Typical publishing cost ranges:
- DIY / “free” self-publishing platforms: $0 upfront, but authors usually pay separately for services like editing, cover design, and formatting.
- Low-budget publishing: often $200–$1,500 (basic cover + minimal formatting, limited professional support).
- Professional-quality self-publishing: often $1,500–$6,000+ depending on editing, custom design, illustrations, marketing services, and book complexity.
- High-complexity books: cookbooks, children’s books, photo books, and full-color titles can cost more due to specialized design and production needs.
The “hidden cost” of the free route:
Publishing for free can be tempting, but it often comes with trade-offs that can limit your book’s success — such as limited distribution options, lower-quality cover/interior design, and a book that looks less professional to readers. A book that appears “unfinished” or “low quality” may struggle to earn reviews, sales, or bookstore/library interest.
If you want a custom quote based on your book type, goals, and timeline, schedule a free consultation with a Publishing Consultant today.

Publishing milestones are completed at each payment interval, and your book is published after the final payment is made. There are no extra payment plan fees and no interest. Payments must be made by check or money order, mailed in, and are nonrefundable with this plan.
- Monthly Payment Plan: Your Publishing Consultant provides a personalized quote and helps set up a monthly plan that fits your budget and timeline. Minimum monthly payments are $100. The publishing process does not begin until your publishing package and any selected options are paid in full. There are no additional plan fees unless you pay by check (a $5 per payment fee applies). This plan is interest-free and payments are fully refundable.
- PayPal Credit: If you prefer PayPal Credit, your Publishing Consultant can add your personalized publishing services to your Shopping Cart so you can pay using PayPal once credit is approved. The publishing process can move forward immediately after payment is completed. (Approval is handled directly through PayPal.)

- Choose the Pay-As-You-Go (3-Part Payment Plan) if you are ready to begin publishing now and want your project to move forward while you pay in three scheduled payments.

Choosing the Right Publishing Path & Company
What is self-publishing? What does “self-published” mean?
Self-publishing means you publish your book independently rather than signing with a traditional publishing house. As a self-published author, you get to keep more control over your book and make the final decisions about your publishing options.
A self-published author is someone who publishes their book through a self-publishing company or platform, and the author is responsible for choosing the services needed to produce and release the book — such as editing, cover design, interior formatting, printing, and distribution.
Outskirts Press is a full-service self-publishing company, which means we help authors publish professionally with expert support throughout the process — from manuscript submission through publication and distribution.
Explore the Outskirts Press publishing packages or schedule a free consultation with a Publishing Consultant.
How does self-publishing work?
Self-publishing works by allowing an author to publish their book independently, without having to be selected by a traditional publisher. The author chooses the publishing services needed to produce a professional book — such as editing, cover design, interior formatting, printing, and distribution.
In general, the self-publishing process includes:
- Finishing your manuscript and preparing it for publication
- Selecting publishing services (editing, cover design, formatting, marketing options)
- Reviewing and approving proof files before your book is released
- Publishing and distribution in the formats you choose (print and digital)
- Marketing your book to build visibility and sales over time
Outskirts Press is a full-service self-publishing company, which means you get professional guidance and support throughout the process.
Explore the Outskirts Press publishing packages or schedule a free consultation.
Is it better to self-publish or traditional publish?
It depends on your goals, timeline, and how much control you want. Both traditional publishing and self-publishing can be great options, but they work very differently.
Traditional publishing may be a good fit if you want:
- A publisher to choose your book (often after agent representation)
- A longer timeline and competitive submission process
- Potential access to established publishing networks
Self-publishing may be a good fit if you want:
- To publish on your own schedule (without waiting for approval)
- More control over your cover, interior design, and publishing decisions
- To publish professionally with support while keeping ownership rights
- To build momentum with reviews, sales, and audience growth
Many authors choose self-publishing because it allows them to publish faster and begin marketing immediately. Some authors later pursue traditional publishing after proving their book’s market potential.
If you’d like help deciding what approach is best for your book, you can schedule a free consultation.
Is self-publishing worth it?
Yes, self-publishing can be worth it if you want more control, a faster path to publication, and the ability to publish professionally without waiting for a traditional publisher to accept your book.
Self-publishing is often worth it for authors who want creative control, a shorter publishing timeline, wide availability in multiple formats, and the ability to begin marketing immediately.
The key to success is publishing professionally with strong editing, a marketable cover, clean interior formatting, and a consistent marketing plan. For guidance, schedule a free consultation.
What is the best self-publishing company — and what should I look for?
The best self-publishing company is the one that fits your goals, your budget, and the level of professional support you want. The right choice should help you publish a high-quality book and make the process clear, guided, and professional.
What to look for in a self-publishing company:
- Professional quality: strong cover design and clean interior formatting examples

How do I choose a publishing company?
Choosing a publishing company depends on your goals. The best publishing company for you should match the type of support you want, your budget, your timeline, and the level of control you want over your book.
Key things to look for when choosing a publishing company:
- Clear services and deliverables: Editing, design, formatting, and publishing support should be spelled out.
- Professional quality: Ask to see examples of covers and interior layouts.
- Distribution options: Make sure your book can be widely distributed in the formats you want.
- Author control: Confirm you can review and approve print files before publication.
- Rights and ownership: Understand who owns the rights and what licenses are granted for distribution.
- Transparent costs: Make sure the full price and optional upgrades are clearly explained.

How do I know if a publishing company is legitimate — and how do I avoid publishing scams?
A legitimate publishing company should be transparent about what it offers, what it costs, and what you receive in return. The best way to avoid publishing scams is to ask questions and confirm key details before signing an agreement.
How to spot a legitimate publishing company:
- Clear deliverables: services like editing, design, and distribution are explained in writing
- Transparent pricing: costs are easy to understand and not hidden behind vague fees
- Real support: you can speak with a real person (Publishing Consultant or Author Representative)
- Proof approvals: you can review and approve cover/interior print files before publication
- Clear contract language: rights, licensing, and responsibilities are explained up front
- Professional quality examples: they can show real cover and interior formatting samples
Common warning signs of publishing scams:
- High-pressure sales tactics or urgent “today only” threats
- Unclear pricing or constantly changing costs
- Promises that guarantee bestseller status, movie deals, or major bookstore placement
- Refusal to provide contract details in writing
- No proof approval process before publishing your book

Book Marketing & Promotion
How do I market my self-published book?
Marketing a self-published book works best when you combine online visibility, reader engagement, and consistent promotion over time. Most successful authors focus on building momentum instead of relying on one big push.
Effective ways to market a self-published book include:
- Set up a strong author website and book page
- Build an email list so you can reach readers directly
- Post consistently on the social platforms your audience uses
- Ask for reviews and share them as social proof
- Run promotions and campaigns around holidays, seasons, or themes
- Book signings, speaking events, and local media outreach
If you want expert guidance, Outskirts Press offers marketing support to help authors build a plan that fits their goals.
What is the best way to promote my book launch?
The best way to promote your book launch is to start early, build excitement, and have a clear plan for the first few weeks after release. A successful launch usually includes both pre-launch preparation and post-launch follow-through.
Strong book launch strategies include:
- Announce your book early and share behind-the-scenes updates
- Build an email list and send launch reminders
- Line up early reviews to post shortly after launch
- Schedule social media posts for launch week
- Plan an event (live, virtual, or local signing)
- Pitch podcasts, blogs, and media outlets before publication
- Keep promoting consistently after launch week ends
The best launches focus on steady visibility — not just a one-day announcement.
How do I get book reviews?
The best way to get book reviews is to ask intentionally and make it easy for readers to leave feedback. Reviews help build trust and can improve your book’s visibility online.
Ways to get more reviews include:
- Ask friends, colleagues, and early supporters to leave an honest review
- Include a short “review request” at the back of your book along with a QR code to your Amazon page to make it easy
- Follow up with your email list after readers purchase
- Send review copies to bloggers, influencers, or genre reviewers
- Share your review link on social media after launch
The key is consistency — many authors gather reviews gradually over time as more readers discover their book.
How do I sell more books after publishing?
Selling more books after publishing usually comes down to visibility, credibility, and consistent outreach. Readers have to discover your book — and trust that it’s worth buying.
Ways authors increase book sales after launch:
- Collect more reviews and testimonials (social proof)
- Refresh your book description (annotation) and keywords
- Post content consistently and link back to your book
- Run time-limited promotions or discounts
- Pitch your book to podcasts, blogs, and influencers
- Schedule events like signings, readings, or speaking engagements
- Promote multiple formats (paperback, eBook, hardcover, audiobook)
The best long-term strategy is to market your book steadily, not just during launch week.
Do you offer book marketing services?
Yes. Outskirts Press offers a variety of book marketing services to help authors promote their books before launch and after publication.
Outskirts Press also provides every author with a Book Marketing Plan prior to publication which outlines how to target and engage their book's ideal reader. For authors publishing under the Basic and Ultimate publishing packages, the Book Marketing Plan is personalized to the author's book.

- Launching your book with a strong promotional plan
- Building author visibility and reader awareness
- Reaching more readers through targeted marketing strategies

Royalties, Earnings & Publishing Strategy
How do book royalties work — and how much do authors make per book?
Royalties are the earnings an author receives when a book is sold. Yes — self-published authors earn royalties, and how much you make per book depends on your book’s retail price, printing cost (for print books), and where the book is sold.
How much money do authors make per book?
Author earnings vary widely. Some authors may earn a small amount per sale, while others earn more depending on pricing, format (paperback, hardback, eBook), and how the book is distributed. In general, higher retail prices can increase royalty potential, but the best price is the one that remains competitive for readers.
Outskirts Press is one of the only self-publishers that allow authors to set their own book pricing and trade discount (within the allowable scale of 40-55%) which, in turn, allow them to control their author profit. Read more about book pricing.
How book royalties work (simple explanation):
- A reader buys your book through an online retailer, bookstore, or distribution channel.
- The retailer and distribution partners take their portion.
- Printing costs are deducted for printed books.
- The remaining amount becomes your royalty earnings.
When do I get paid royalties?
Royalties are paid after sales are reported through the retail and wholesale channels. Because different retailers report on different schedules, there is usually a delay between the date a book sells and the date that sale appears in royalty reporting.
If you have questions about your account, sales reporting, or royalty timing, your Author Representative can help you.
Should I publish paperback or hardcover first?
Most authors choose to publish a paperback first because it is typically more affordable for readers and often easier to sell in higher volume. However, a hardcover edition can be a great fit for certain genres and audiences.
Paperback is often best if you want:
- A lower retail price for readers
- A popular format for general sales
- A flexible option for events and author signings
Hardcover is often best if you want:
- A premium, gift-quality edition
- A strong library and collector appeal
- A great fit for books that benefit from durability (some nonfiction and specialty titles)
Many authors choose to publish both to give readers options and increase sales opportunities.

Self-Publishing Questions (How-To)
How do I know if my manuscript is ready to publish?
Your manuscript is ready to publish when it is complete, carefully reviewed, and as close to “final” as possible. The more complete your manuscript is before formatting begins, the smoother and more cost-effective the publishing process will be.
A manuscript is usually ready when:
- You have a finished draft with a beginning, middle, and end
- You have revised for clarity, consistency, and flow
- Spelling and grammar have been checked (professional editing is recommended)
- Chapters are in the correct order and labeled clearly
- All images, charts, or special content are finalized (if applicable)
If you’d like guidance on whether your manuscript is ready, you can schedule a free consultation.
How do I publish short stories?
You can publish short stories in several ways, depending on your goals — such as building your author platform, sharing your work with readers, or creating a book you can sell and distribute.
Common ways to publish short stories include:
- Short story collections: Combine multiple stories into one professionally published book.
- Literary magazines and contests: Submit individual stories to publications that accept submissions.
- Online distribution: Publish digitally to reach readers worldwide.
If you want to publish your short stories as a professional book, you can create a short story collection in formats such as paperback, hardcover, and eBook. Outskirts Press can publish books as short as 18 pages, and your Author Representative can help you add appropriate front/back matter if needed.

Can I use my own formatted print files?
Yes. With our One-Click or Ultimate publishing packages, authors may submit their own print-ready PDF files for the interior and/or cover.
What we require:
- Your files must be submitted as print-ready interior and/or cover PDFs.
- Files must follow our digital file submission instructions and meet our print-ready technical requirements.
What Outskirts Press does (and does not) do with author-supplied files:
- We do not perform editorial work on author-supplied files, including proofreading, content editing, typesetting, or font alterations.
- Our reviews focus on technical requirements, and we may provide layout or style suggestions based on current industry standards.
- Because Outskirts Press did not create the native files, we cannot be responsible for how author-created files will print.
File review policy:
- We include two free reviews of your files before galley.
- After the included reviews, hourly fees may apply.
- If you switch during production and want Outskirts Press to create the file(s) for you instead, a change order fee will apply.
Do you offer editing services?
Yes. Outskirts Press offers professional editing services, including our highly recommended Professional Copyediting.
Professional Copyediting is ideal if you want your manuscript reviewed for typos, misspellings, grammar, and contextual word use. This service does extend your publication timeline, since editing is completed before the book moves into formatting and production.
Professional Copyediting details:
- Billing: billed per word at 360 cents per word.
- Minimum word count: 15,000 words (if your manuscript is under 15,000 words, 15,000 is used to calculate cost).
- Poetry manuscripts: editing is charged hourly with a 5-hour minimum.
- You stay in control: after editing, you receive your manuscript back and can accept or reject each editorial recommendation. You always have the final say.
Additional editing options:
- We also offer moderate and extensive editing services on a case-by-case basis.
- To request a deeper level of editing, contact your Author Representative during the pre-production process. In these cases, an editor reviews your manuscript and provides an estimate for the level of edit you want.
Tip: Editing your manuscript before it is formatted is typically the most cost-effective option. While editing after layout is possible, it can add avoidable fees — so if you want copyediting, it’s best to start early.
How does book distribution work?
Book distribution is the system that makes your book orderable through retail, wholesale, and library channels. With Outskirts Press, print books are distributed through major wholesale distributors, and orders are fulfilled using print-on-demand — so your book is printed when it’s ordered and shipped to the retailer or reader.
In simple terms:
- Outskirts Press sets up your book for wholesale distribution after publication.
- Retailers and libraries can order through established distribution networks.
- Print-on-demand fulfillment helps keep your book available without you managing inventory.

- Credit card (preferred): Pay online in your Author Center. Credit card payments are processed immediately. We use Thawte Secure Certification so online transactions are safe and secure.
- Check: We accept checks only when accompanied by the Outskirts Press Order Form printed from the Shopping Cart in your Author Center. Processing can take up to four weeks from the time you mail your check. We do not accept checks from anyone who has previously had a check returned unpaid. A $5 processing fee applies to each check payment.
- PayPal: Send payments to order@outskirtspress.com. A $5 processing fee applies to each payment, and there can be a delay of up to three weeks. PayPal payments are entered as a credit (less the $5 processing fee).
- Western Union/MoneyGram: A $99 service processing fee applies to every Western Union/MoneyGram transaction. Make the payment to Jeanine Sampson (Parker, CO), then email your Publishing Consultant with the Transaction ID, plus your name and address. Western Union requires this information when the payment is collected. Payments without the $99 service fee are not collected, and payments are collected once per week, so if you are under time constraints, this is not the payment method to use.

- We do not accept payment by wire transfer.
- Pre-payments / partial payments by credit card: We accept individual pre-payments of $100 or more. Each payment must be billed separately, so please contact Accounting at accounting@outskirtspress.com to set up your payment. A $5 fee applies to each payment (deducted from the amount paid). These payments appear as credits in your account. Please note: no work can be done in the publication process or on any option until full payment is received unless you are paying under an official payment plan. We cannot set up payment plans with automatic billing.
