Product description...

The Runaway

There is a powerful and consistent theme throughout this story. The weight of Aaron’s parents’ dreams for him perfectly frames an internal conflict. There is a specific symbolism in the book which carries an immense emotional weight right to the ending, even as Aaron changes his name to Cole, showing a rejection of the life his parents wanted for him. The relationship between Cole, after he met his Jewish roommate, Isaiah, is a source of warmth and growth. Seeing Cole learn about another faith and culture, especially through the quiet, profound moments, like watching Isaiah pray, showed how much Cole had matured. Their friendship feels genuine and provides a necessary counterpoint. The ending is incredibly brave and emotionally resonant. The choice to have Aaron as Cole return is devastating but feels true to the story. The last image of Jacob, his brother, creates a moment of connection across a void of silence. The story is deeply moving and true to life. It will stay with you for a long time.
