Hardback format

For an additional fee, authors can elect to publish a hardback edition of their book instead of a paperback edition. The hardbacks feature either a full-color laminated hardback cover (perfect for textbooks and children's books) or a full-color wraparound dust jacket over laminated hardbacks with printing on the spine that allows up to 42 characters. Please check the full list of sizes and details by viewing each individual package within your Publishing Center under the Publishing Packages menu tab for casebound editions available with a full-color Glossy laminated cover or a full-color Matte laminated cover.
There is also the option of publishing both a paperback AND a hardback edition as two different formats, which incurs an additional fee of $399.

Hardback options are available with our Ultimate, Basic and Full-Color Publishing Packages.  Our dust-jacket hardback, however, is only available to our Ultimate and Full-Color Publishing Packages.

All hardback books have a minimum page count of at least 18 pages and B&W books have a maximum page count of 1,000, while color books have a maximum page cout between 840 and 900 (depending on the trim size selected).

Hardbacks are available in two different formats:

Laminated Hardback:

A laminated casebound hardback is printed in full-color and has both glossy or matte finishes available.

Dust-Jacket Hardback

A dust-jacketed hardback with have a laminated casebound cover printed to look like blue cloth which is then covered in a removable, full-color, wrap-around dust-jacket. The dust-jacket hardback has the title and author  name, space permitting (up to 42 characters), printed along the spine.  This is then covered by the wrap-around dust-jacket designed according to your cover selections.
Hardback Recommendations
Most authors choose to have the size of their hardback book match the size of their paperback book.  A different size hardback is an available optional upgrade.

Fiction hardbacks are typically 6x9, 5.5x8.5 or 6.14x9.21—rarely are they larger.

We do not recommend a laminated casebound hardback for a fiction book. Fiction hardbacks should only be published with the dust-jacket hardback option.

Poetry hardbacks tend to be 5.5x8.5 or 6x9.

As with fiction books, it's best to avoid the laminated casebound option and instead choose the dust-jacket option for poetry books.

Non-fiction hardbacks are typically 6x9, 6.14x9.21 or 7x10—rarely are they smaller, though they can be sometimes be larger at 8x10 or 8.5x11.

Whether or not your non-fiction hardback is the laminated casebound or the dust-jacket option is largely dependant on your particular sub-genre and/or personal choice.

Cookbooks, in particular, are almost always laminated hardbacks, so they lay open easily for your would-be chef.

Children's hardbacks can be either laminated casebound or dust-jacket hardbacks.  But we typically recommend laminated casebound since dust-jackets can be easily lost or torn by little ones.

The most popular size for children's hardback books is 8.5x8.5 (square), 11x8.5 (landscape) or 8.5x11 (portrait).
