Welcome to the pages of “CALLING”, the long awaited compendium of the poetic works of poetry icon Dorothea Neale. It was Dr. Neale’s mission to “gladden the hearts of poets everywhere” by presenting them before appreciative audiences, and in a real sense advance the cause of poetry. It was this vision that inspired her to found The New York Poetry Forum in 1958. Now, at last! The world of poets she inspired will have their own collection of Dorothea’s own favorite poems. In her words, “Know that this closed door shall lead to many opened.”

Dorothea Neale (1902 – 1999) was a leader in the creative arts movement of the Mid 20th Century. She chose Greenwich Village as her home base for cultivating and expanding poetry as an essential genre in the grounding of New York City’s mid 20th Century identity as the ‘Cultural Capital of the World’. She was recognized with numerous national and international honors and awards for nurturing, presenting and publishing the talent of countless poets from around the world over a 35 year career as Founder and Director of the New York Poetry Forum.
