The formula for dealing with the challenges of bullying, gangs, drugs, vaping, police encounters, sexting, train surfing, alcoholism, financial literacy, education, gun violence, jail, and choosing friends wisely.

During my career at Rikers Island, my primary goal was to reduce violence and lower the high rate of recidivism. Now, in retirement, my focus is on crime prevention and giving young people the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to stay out of the criminal justice system entirely. I know from experience that early intervention and education are key to empowering the next generation to reach their full potential.

To help achieve this goal, I authored THE STUDENT OF THE GAME as a practical guide for Middle and High School students. The book is designed to help them navigate some of the most pressing challenges they face, including bullying, gangs, drugs, jail, education, gun violence, vaping, sexting, police encounters, train surfing, financial literacy, and the critical importance of choosing friends wisely. Each chapter provides real life scenarios, thoughtful questions, sound advice, and tools for making great decisions.

THE STUDENT OF THE GAME will serve as an excellent resource for schools, families, and community organizations working to support our youth.

While working at RIKER’S ISLAND, retired Warden Howard Robertson had care custody and control over New York’s most notorious drug kingpins, murderers and gang members. His personal goal was to reduce violence and lower the high rate of recidivism. Now, in retirement, his focus is on crime prevention and giving young people the knowledge, confidence, and the skills they need to stay out of the criminal justice system entirely. To help accomplish this goal, he gave an inspiring TED TALK entitled “It’s Not How You Start Out, It’s How You End Up”. Mr. Robertson received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Science degree from Long Island University.
