Product description...

In Minorcan Voices: The Forgotten People of the Turnbull Colony, Robert P. Jones recounts the harrowing journey and enduring legacy of the Minorcan people—an often-overlooked group of Mediterranean men, women, and children who were drawn to Florida in the 18th century by promises of land and freedom, only to find themselves ensnared in a brutal colonial experiment. The 1,225 weary immigrants arrived filled with hope, yet they endured nine years of suffering. Their stories deserve to be heard. This work is historical fiction inspired by individuals who may have been in the colony and by events that could have taken place. From their origins in Menorca, Italy, Corsica, and Greece to their harsh existence under Dr. Andrew Turnbull’s overseers in New Smyrna, these Mediterranean colonists faced immense hardship, betrayal, and the loss of 964 members of their community, whose graves have never been found. Yet through it all, they preserved their culture, strength, and dignity, becoming an essential part of early American history and a growing community in St. Augustine, Florida. Utilizing original documents, oral histories, and meticulous research, Jones gives voice to those who have long been silenced, creating a vivid portrait of survival, resistance, and community. This historical fiction transcends mere suffering; it stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and reflects a lost chapter in American heritage. 964 Minorcan voices—nearly forgotten—now speak once more.
