Max Müller translated from Sanskrit the Rig Veda into German, the first complete version in a European language. This expertise in Sanskrit gave him entry into the intellectual world of the 19th century and provided him with a professorship at Oxford. Along the way he formed friendships with Schopenhauer, Mendelssohn, Fontane, Burnouf, Julien, Renan, Bismarck, Carlyle, Darwin, Emerson, the Tagores, Gladstone, Dodgson, Schliemann, Legge, and Alexander Graham Bell. He is as revered in India as he is under-appreciated in the West.

Richard Gangelhoff is from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from Minnetonka Senior High School, Minneapolis Community & Technical College, University of Minnesota (B. A. in World Literature), and Augsburg University (MFA in Creative Writing). He worked twelve years for Target Inc, HQ, ten years for BookSmart, three years at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and two years at the Walker Art Center.
