Beck, son of a plantation owner and a barn slave, flees west after he’s accused of killing his father. In Missouri, he volunteers for a large trapping party heading north on two keel boats. Attacked by Arikara, he is rescued by three Crows, Sun Walker and her cousins. Back with his land party, he volunteers for dangerous missions as they fight fire, disease and hostiles. Sun Walker saves him again after he’s mauled by a panther and targeted by enemies. Again with his party, he pilots a boat downriver but is taken prisoner by his half-brother, fort commander, who led the claim Beck was their father’s murderer.
