He’s an experienced scuba diver and early in his career led pioneering explorations of Florida’s water-filled caverns and springs to depths of 200 feet.

He’s the author of four books on submarine history published by the Naval Institute Press in Annapolis: Back from the Deep, Slade Cutter, The Galloping Ghost and Pushing the Limits. His television appearances include The History Channel’s series Silent Service and Man, Moment and Machine. His work on a variety of subjects has appeared in Philadelphia magazine, National Wildlife, Sierra, Down East, Pennsylvania and many other periodicals.

Chilton, head of STRATCOM and a decorated space shuttle pilot. Carl also led a two-day symposium on undersea warfare at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas in 2009.
