THE STUTTERER

According to the ancients: “The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly.” Self-confidence guarantees that anyone, especially children can accomplish whatever they set their minds to. Adlyn Hylton’s protagonist, Sydney Plinburn is just such an example. With help from his only parent, an active imagination and encouragement from his imaginary friend, Sydney grows into becoming a confident, compassionate individual whose desire for social involvement leads to his evolution as a leader. In The Stutterer, Sydney develops the confidence to express his thoughts despite his impediment. His renewed confidence and leadership empower him to be accepted for who he is. By Marilyn E. Adlyn Hylton’s book, The Stutterer is partly based on the true experiences, as told to her by her brother, Sydney, a quietly brilliant man, despite his impediment. Because of his stuttering, he was misunderstood, dismissed, bullied, and as a result, he became disillusioned with school and eventually dropped out. Adlyn Hylton is a retired teacher, has one son and resides in New York with her retired husband and one grandchild. She still volunteers in her community, assisting in educational environments.
