Not an Allemande Left for Andy
It’s a grand night for the Grand Squares Square Dance Club, with nationally-famous caller Andy Wetherbee directing the promenades, the do-si-dos, the allemande lefts and the hugs called yellow rocks. However, the crowd’s excitement takes a turn in a different direction at the intermission when Andy, who has gone outside for a smoke, is found dead on the sidewalk from an apparent heart attack. When an autopsy reveals that Andy died from a massive dose of deadly fentanyl, apparently injected into his neck, the newspaper reporter-photographer team of Warren “Mitch” Mitchell and Alan “Al” Jeffrey goes to work searching for clues to the killer. Mitch becomes distracted by trouble in his boyhood home, where his mother accidentally shoots an intruder that she is trying to drive off her property. When he finally looks the caller’s killer squarely in the eye, Mitch finds himself searching for a way to promenade into the safety of his partner’s yellow-rocking arms.

Glenn Ickler has had a long career in newspapers as a reporter, feature writer, theater critic, columnist and editor in Minnesota and Massachusetts. He was the leader of an editorial page staff that was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and has won numerous awards for his writing. A native of Minnesota, he now resides in the tiny town of Hopedale, Massachusetts, somewhere west of Boston, and spends the summer months in a tiny cottage on the tiny island of Martha’s Vineyard.
