BASED UPON THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A RARE WOMAN

This memoir is a celebration of Emmelinah’s historic rise from the brutal racism, cruel abuses, and gusts of abject poverty to an astounding and inspirational wave of successes. The memories of her life’s inspiring climb through apartheid’s nearly impossible racist and sexist barriers will not likely be forgotten, after taking root in the folds of your memory. Charles Goldstein was raised in a sea-side town five miles north of Boston, MA. Leaving an award-filled career in architecture, he moved with his life-partner physician to South Africa in order to support her dream of promoting the health of mother-child relationships. For nearly five years, while she cared for HIV/AIDS-stricken mothers and children at Nkosi’s Haven, Mr. Goldstein became the surrogate father to a dozen teen-aged boys who had never had a father, to aid in guiding them through troubled times into manhood. Not surprisingly, while at “The Haven”, his attitudes toward his own life and frames of mind were significantly altered when he came to know, and developed a caring friendship, with the remarkable Emmelinah Sindane, age 43 and mother of three. While there, he also represented the indigent, marvelously talented, lady weavers from the tiny nearby country of Lesotho at a Rosebank, Johannesburg craft market. Now in retirement, he spends his time writing, painting and gazing across stunning rocky shores to the deep blue lobster-filled waters of Maine.
