This Is a Story of Growing Up in Eastern Kentucky Where Poverty Seemed to be All Around—More So at Our House

As I look back at the 1950s and early ’60s I realize now that what seemed like a depression to me, truly was a blessing in disguise. I honestly believe that if today’s children had a little taste of the past we would all be better off in many, many ways. I thank God that I was born and raised in Eastern Kentucky and I will be an old head-of-the-holler Kentuckian until the day I die.

James Adkins and his wife Pamela live in Southern Ohio near the banks of the Ohio River, which borders eastern Kentucky, approximately twenty-five miles from where this story takes place. James is a retired truck driver, although he worked in various fields before settling into trucking. He has traveled the United States and Canada along with various countries worldwide. Never straying far from his childhood home as far as a permanent residence. James has entertained the thought of writing a book about his childhood for many years.
