Powerful folks are out to get you. The law wants to puts you in jail. The criminals want to put you in the morgue. You don’t have the power to fight them. So you’ve got to run.
An ODYSSEY as explained in the dictionary is a long wandering or voyage usually marked by many changes of fortune. Over many years, odyssey has been used many times, as vehicle by which to tell a story. Probably the two that are the best-known examples of this are The Odyssey by Homer, and Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. Perhaps it is a favored method of storytelling because it allows the author a fairly easy way to make transitions of people, places and events. Anyway, this story is an odyssey. It is a about a teenage boy, who by way of just plain bad luck becomes involved in a catastrophic event of such magnitude, that he’s forced to flee from his home and lifestyle, to desperately seek refuge wherever he can find it. During his flight he meets various people. There’s a man who is trying to re-establish his life after suffering debilitating injury. There’s a woman trying to defend herself after being charged with a serious crime. There are people who have memories of trying to survive the Prohibition Era Gang Wars, The Great Depression, and World War Two. And there’s a teenage girl who has been lured and tricked into a life of modern-day slavery. These are just some of people he meets and stories he hears, all the while he is on his own quest for safety and survival. And yet through all this turmoil, somehow two pleasures are always prominent in his thoughts, MUSIC and BASEBALL.
