Karate and Zen As One

Ku:A Lifetime of Karate and Zen shares with readers the fact that there must be more to the practice of Karate than mere self-defense or tournament sport. The author takes us on a fascinating journey through 60 years of personal experience that show how Karate, other martial and cultural arts are inextricably interwoven with Zen.Beginning with a brief history of Karate dating back to the sixteenth century in China, its introduction to Okinawan culture, the author reveals how this ancient martial art is a crossroad between Eastern and Western cultures. Sensei Heshiki emphasizes the critical importance of the Karate practitioner’s understanding of Karate as initially physical, moving toward spiritual reliance, and ultimately unifying body/mind through zazen (sitting Zen).

In 1966, he opened a Karate Dojo in New York.Reading about martial arts history, philosophy, he soon realized that his practice did not coalesce with the content in books.Ill at ease, it was imperative to seek a teacher. He travelled to Okinawa, met the renowned Karate Master, Shoshin Nagamine, and trained intensively in his dojo.Returning to New York, he integrated zazen into Karate classes under the guidance of Reverend Sogen Sakiyama.

Moving to Hawaii in 1977, Heshiki Sensei met and trained under Tanouye Tenshin Roshi at the International Zen Dojo of Hawaii and in 1993, was ordained as a Zen priest.Dogen Hosokawa Roshi says, “Heshiki Sensei is one of the few Karate teachers with an understanding of Zen.”
