Think About It This Way.

In The Deadly Mondaine, the life of Hattie Rosales is tracked from her origin in Post-World War II, working class, southside Chicago, through her early career at Marshall Fields’, through her partnership with crack shot, philosophy and psychology reading, Ukrainian food aficionado, Ludmilla “Milly” Netsurov in a business which appears to be a Tupperware distributorship, but is in reality, well, something completely different, and continuing with her rapid relocation from the Chicago area to Gethsemane Illinois. In the course of the book, Hattie revisits her successes and failures, and addresses the mystery of Milly’s death. Back in the present, the deaths at Shady Rest have excited the attention of the Chief of Police, LaTasha Cranton, Chicago Police Department veteran who has been hired by Gethsemane to proactively prevent a Ferguson, Missouri incident. Chief Cranton intuitively gets a sense of Hattie’s past and present. The central mystery in the book is the shotgun slaying of a local mogul at his faux French Chateau in suburban Gethsemane. Hattie and Latasha wind up cooperating on the investigation of the case, leading to the result of Hattie being, at the same time, an investigator and a suspect in the different mysteries that weave through the story. Throughout the book, Hattie is driven by the need to reveal to her now-successful daughter, Ines, the details of Hattie’s professional life, and how those details enabled Ines’ career.
