Product description...

The idea for this book has metamorphosed from inspirations gained from my parents and personal observations of the environmental, social, economic and political transformation taking place in Ali Ogba communities spanning over several decades. The main idea of the book dates back to several decades ago when I was a young man completing field work for my research as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the B. Sc. degree in Geography at the University of Nigeria. The field work was interrupted by the Nigerian – Biafra war but resumed after the war. The original idea was developed and additions made focusing on the design of Ali Ogba communities’ settlement patterns. These manuscripts were put aside while pursuing advanced degrees in the United States until the nineteen nineties when issues of Ali Ogba sustainable development occupied my thoughts especially as each passing decade brought changes in the physical, socio-cultural, political and economic environment landscapes of Ali Ogba communities. The overarching goal is to document for posterity the Ali Ogba environment and way of life in the early part of the 20th century in contrast to the Ali Ogba of today with emphasis on the changes that have occurred and what they portend for the future of Ali Ogba communities in the contexts of 21st century Nigeria and global technological advances.

Chukudi V. IzeoguChukudi V. Izeogu is Emeritus professor of Urban and Regional Planning, Department of Community and Regional Planning at Alabama A&M University (AAMU), Normal, Alabama, USA with over thirty years of experience in academics and planning practice. He served as chair (1998-2012) of AAMU planning programs and chair of Geography Department, University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria (1982 – 1990). Previously, he was Executive Secretary of Port Harcourt Metropolitan Planning Authority and Town Planning Officer, Rivers State Ministry of Land and Housing, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Professor Izeogu was born in Ede in the Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) and completed his elementary school in the neighboring town of Obite before pursuing post primary education at Ihie in the present Abia State. Thereafter, he pursued his college degree at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in the nineteen sixties where he majored in Geography with special interest in geomorphology. His study at UNN exposed him to field work in many parts of Ali Ogba with particular focus on the physical geography and drainage characteristics of the then Ahoada Division and other parts of south east Nigeria.Apart from spending most of his years as a young man in Ali Ogba, his tenure as an urban and regional planning officer in Port Harcourt soon after the Nigerian civil war and later as an academic in the University of Port Harcourt in the nineteen eighties provided him opportunities for more in-depth understanding of Ali Ogba communities and other parts of Rivers State. Although Professor Izeogu has been living in the USA since the nineties, he has kept abreast of development of the communities in Ali Ogba through frequent visits and research on Ali Ogba environment and sustainable development issues. Currently, his interest is focused on strategies that will ensure future development of Ali Ogba through meaningful civic engagement and economic empowerment of its youth to ensure future stability and socio-economic development of the communities.
