Product description...

More Than a Century of “Camp Meetin’ ” Memories!

“Camp meetin’ time” was a holiday occasion as well as a time of devotion for the Ohio pioneer. These meetings offered an escape from the seclusion, drudgery, and monotony of rural farm life. Planned around planting and harvest schedules, they were a chance to camp out and watch the celebrities of the day speak. They were an opportunity to make new friends, reconnect with old ones, and spend whole days together, praying and singing praises. The Stoutsville Camp Meeting in Stoutsville, Ohio, has been one such gathering taking place for more than a century, and we know you’ll be fascinated by its story. This book traces that story, from the very first meeting in 1897 to modern times, and includes historical research, first-hand accounts, and photographs that span the generations. While some aspects of the early camp meetings may seem foreign to us today, many are the same: we go to enrich our spiritual lives, connect with friends, and relax from our busy lives. It’s these things that draw us, again and again, to “Camp meetin’ time.”

This book came about due to the efforts of many on the Stoutsville Camp Meeting Historical Committee, all of whom have attended the camp since they were children and have a long history of family participation. At least eight successive generations of Dorothy Ruble Hudson’s family were camp-goers; she has spent several years researching the camp’s history and completed the historical writing. Sandy Turner assisted with editing and content planning. The entire committee is devoted to preserving the history of The Stoutsville Camp for generations to come.
