Eat in Harmony was the name of my father’s small café. He seemed to be saying, “Gather at my table. Share a meal together. Savor your conversation. Find a common humanity. Leave with newfound joy for the next hours of your life.” His philosophy influenced me in my ‘eatery’, my profession as a musician and teacher: “Gather together with me. Let the ‘sounds’ of art and faith course for a time in your veins and your heart. Think about life in all its beauty and promise. Leave my ‘table’ with a renewed sense of joy as you face tomorrow.” Welcome to my classroom around a table spread with dollops of faith, art, family, philosophy, miracles, life experiences, music history, and chance meetings. Some might call it a smorgasbord, but in my mind it is a musical banquet: harmony in the broadest sense. So, as my Greek immigrant father would say, “Fàte se armoni: Eat in Harmony.”

Gregory S. Athnos, author of two award-winning books, is a retired professor of music from North Park University in Chicago. His choirs performed across the United States, Canada, China, and Europe. Students called his lectures ‘lessons in life’.
