Subsequent to division of India in 1947 into two Sovereign States of ‘India’ and ‘Pakistan’ (West and East Pakistan), devastating communal riots were engineered by ‘Religious fanatics’ causing greatest Human Migration across the borders of newly born twin states. Millions of Hindus and Muslims fled each others’ borders leaving behind their hearth and homes. While fleeing, the joint family of the writer consisting of 35 members got fragmented and Dila’s parents escaped to Calcutta (now Kolkata) of Sovereign India, but had extreme difficulties survive. This book tells the story of the joint family, its break-up and ultimate survival of few of its members. Division of India and human migrations caused same fate for thousands of families at that time, this book reflects the story of one such family.

D.K. Saha was born in 1939 in an aristocratic Wealthy joint family of thirty five members in a village called ‘Benodepur’ in Dhaka now Capital City of Bangladesh. He was affectionately called ‘Dila’ by his Mom. Division during the time of Indian independence caused his family move from Dhaka to Kolkata without any resources in hand. Dila, a child of ten, had to work and earn to feed the entire family of seven members while his father who fought for India’s independence from British rule, stated searching for a job. During those critical days Dila’s mom’s untiring efforts enabled Dila to continue his studies. Thus Dila could cross the barriers of examinations in schools then college and finally University of Calcutta while working. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Law and Master’s degree in commerce. He accepted a Government of India job in revenue sector. He received many ‘Commendations’ and Tax-free cash awards from Govt. of India for his excellent job performance. The cash awards amounted to over half a million rupees. Govt. of India also appointed him as a Faculty in Govt. Officers’ Training College in Kolkata. After 33 years of job, now he is enjoying retired life in his own house in Kolkata.
