Product description...

Auntie Clara is a book that will give you a sense of what life was like in Unalakleet, Alaska—a remote isolated village in Alaska in the 1900s.

Auntie Clara was a person who served her Eskimo people well. She was unselfish and was happy to share her resources with anyone. When one got to know her, she was an infectious person. Her stories were shared with her children as well as others. She was very professional in her service as health aide, school cook, house builder. All of her children honored her from the oldest to the youngest. There was a 24-year span between her oldest son, Merlin, and her youngest daughter, Rachel.

Author Information...

Clara Oyoumick was my mother, and even though I left home at age 18, I spent many summers with her. I also lived in Unalakleet, Alaska, during the years 1970–1980, so our friendship continued throughout. She also shared her wisdom with me whenever I needed it. Her last desire was to spend her last few years with my sister and me even though she was in an assisted living home. My sister visited her every day, and I visited approximately 3 times a week. Her mind was sharp up until she experienced a major stroke five months before she passed away. She wasn’t able to communicate fluently as before.
