A few words from the poet!

At age six, after having read many of the “collected works” anthologies in the large bookcase my mother had prepared for me following my birth, my first creative inspiration was Poetry! The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, had propelled the United States into World War II, and a huge War Bond Drive, the first of many, had begun. Then, it wasn’t generally known that our country was largely unprepared and actually, “strapped,” for the huge sums of money that would be needed to fund the war effort. (Saudi Arabia had denied our request for a loan! – I only learned of this when the movie, “Flags Of Our Fathers” was released.) Just prior to that time, my exceptional English Language Arts skills had shown forth, and I was experimenting with self expression, especially, via poetry. I thought about the War Bond Drive and wanted to help, so I wrote a short poem that included the slogan: “Buy War Bonds! Back The Attack And Never Slack!” My poem was sent to The International Bookbinder, which published it. The slogan caught on and was used during the war to encourage people to buy (and keep buying) war bonds. (I still remember the Gold Stars in many windows!) At this point, I should alert my potential readers that I was destined, at birth, to use written English more than the average person, in many areas of my life, even as a features writer for two local newspapers. My parents and their parents had been bookbinders, for at least three generations! I was brought up with a love of books, and an ever growing appreciation of their great power to inform and influence human thoughts and emotions. While educators know that the human mind is sometimes resistant, poets know that the human soul is remarkably receptive! Thus, Poetry Rules! It’s now my preferred means of expression! I should also mention here that Auguste Rodin’s famous sculpture on the cover, The Thinker, was originally titled, The Poet! We poets sometimes appear unclothed, completely baring our hearts and souls, as revealed in our works! I hope you find my poems interesting and thought-provoking. They’ve all been arranged in categories, for convenient access. Although they cover a broad range of topics, a few poems really defy classification! My poetry has been called “somewhat reminiscent” of Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Ogden Nash, rolled into an amalgam! I’m anxious to learn what you think of them! Author Information...

Irwin Jack NissmanIrwin Jack Nissman has spent much of his life attending many public and private colleges, and technical training centers, learning how to continue to be useful to America, and trying to "give back" to the New York State taxpayers who have funded his many college scholarships. First, for almost forty years, he served as an electrical and electronics engineer, working strenuously to defend our precious American freedoms. He worked for twelve companies, originating many commercial products and digital computer systems. During the Cold War, his "landmark" secure employee ID card validation system patent proved to be the "key" that was instrumental in inspiring many inventors, who followed, to create the banking debit cards and ATMs that have made banks accessible, even when closed, as well as the debit and food stamp EBT "swipe"cards used at supermarket checkout pinpads. After the Cold War, he studied Computer Science at a local college (on a scholarship), and joined a networked computer training school, where he earned Network Administrator Certification, and stayed on to give over eight hundred students certification pretests and technical tutorials on the internet protocol suites. Next, he volunteered for three years, as a mentor, in a local high school, helping foreign-born students to improve their English Language Arts skills. While retraining to become a certified New York State and New York City school teacher (also on a scholarship), he tutored local college and secondary school students, privately. His students number in the thousands! From age 66 to 75, he served as a math, science and technology teacher in a few New York City schools, and finally, as a multi-certified classroom teacher, and an "in-home" high school and middle school teacher for many New York State school districts, commuting daily between multiple assignments, in both Westchester and Rockland counties. In 2004, time-shared with home-schooling students, he returned to his first creative art form, poetry! The sources of inspiration for his poetry have been many, from both in and out of this world! His use of poetry to engage the minds and hearts of his readers is impressive, in itself, but mainly, his manifest desire to teach, and increase human awareness, through his poetry is, at once, sincere and artful!
