As with any tool, it can be used, or it can be abused. We need every tool that we can get. Methadone is not the “liquid handcuffs”- the addiction is the handcuffs. Methadone can be the key to freedom from those handcuffs if it is used effectively. Addiction can’t be contained by jail, and it won’t be ignored. It will continue to pull down our culture until we acknowledge its power, and grapple with it in effective and realistic ways.

Rebecca Janes is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor. She has a Masters degree in Expressive Therapies from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has worked at a methadone clinic in New Bedford, MA since 1996, and has a private practice near her home in Westport, MA, where she sees children, adolescents, adults and couples for a range of mental health issues. She is certified in EMDR. Her first book, “Generation RX, Kids on Pills, a Parents Guide” was published in 2009, and addresses her concern about young people abusing ADHD meds, and becoming addicted to pain pills.
