What is Co-teaching?

Co-teaching has been introduced as a means of bridging the gap between special and general education and meeting the unique needs of students with and without disabilities. While the number of texts on co-teaching is growing, there are still no concrete examples of the day-to-day struggles associated solely with secondary schools.

This report tells educators exactly what they need to know prior to implementing a co-teaching program, and may point out some factors not considered for those who may already have a program in progress.

Dr. Adelbert Wilber is currently working as an education consultant in Denver, Colorado. Originally from Bradford, Pennsylvania, Dr. Wilber graduated from Inter-Lakes High School in Meredith, New Hampshire, before serving as a P-3 Orion Aircrewman in the United States Navy.

While serving in the Navy, Dr. Wilber earned his designation as a Master Training Specialist and was awarded a Navy Achievement Medal for his efforts and expertise. Dr. Wilber earned his Bachelors degree in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College (formerly Regents College) just before retiring from the Navy in 2003. He went on to obtain a certificate in Special Education from Regents University, a Master of Education degree in Instructional Design and Technology, from American InterContinental University, course work in Organizational Psychology from Walden University, and he earned his Ph.D. in Professional Studies in Education, from Capella University.

Dr. Wilber has taught grades 9-12 in public education, he was an adjunct instructor, teaching Psychology at Ivy Tech Community College for two years, and he also taught two sections of teacher preparation for the TeacherReady program at the University of West Florida. He is currently working on a new revison to "Co-teaching for High School.
