The first WET MY MOUTH WITH HONEY novel, subtitled Sweet, Sweet Fare For These Troubled Times, left Sylver Smith (Sylvi) and McKenzie Raintree (Z) on the verge of running to Mexico to avoid their imprisonment in the United States on marijuana charges. This novel, THE SEQUEL, resumes the tale. It begins the first of February, 1969, with Sylvi and Z driving the back roads out of El Paso after leaving the farmhouse where they’d lived since being released on bond from El Paso County Jail at the end of October, 1968. They are headed to Mexico. Upon their arrival, they are at once caught in the urgency of their own survival, so much so that their pursuit of bringing positive change to the world—Z espousing violent overthrow and Sylvi holding firmly to a Gandhi-like, peaceful transformation—is thwarted. She also believes that hallucinogens, like peyote and LSD, will raise awareness in a world fraught with the distraction of materialism and militarism and will reveal the interconnectedness of all humankind. Love and peace are not only words to her. They are her life’s breath. Their first night in Acapulco, Miguel, Z’s “friend” and connection to the marijuana farmer takes their VW into the jungle, over-revs the engine, and blows it up, leaving them at his mercy. Sylvi knows Miguel has disabled their car on purpose, while Z continues to trust him. Within two months, Miguel leads them through perilous adventures that leave them penniless. Sylvi experiences countless harrowing events at his hands and becomes acutely aware that he is an obstacle in her spiritual path—a lesson to learn and overcome—something the Tarot cards had warned her about before they’d departed the States. She does learn but not without cost. Pregnancy, imprisonment, and betrayal keep her company as she journeys through three more years to the conclusion of her story.
