Sneakers thudded against the pavement. Her heart pounded. The pads of the black dog's feet kept apace. Holding her broken wrist protectively against her thundering breast, she glanced back. The headlights were getting closer. They were all to be seen in the moonless pitch of the night. There was no question who was coming. She stumbled. Instinctively, both hands came down to break her fall. The jagged agony of her wrist speared up through her shoulder, overshadowing the raw scrapes suddenly gouged into her knees. Tears burned down her cheeks as she crawled off the road, bringing the injured arm back up against her breast. The headlights loomed closer. Behind her, she could hear the dog panting. She continued to crawl....
