FLORDELISA MOTA grew up under a brutal dictatorship. The pain of her father’s persecution by the regime led her to use freedom as a symbol in her work. She, with her husband and five children, suffered a civil war. Because of the violence, they left the Dominican Republic; the United States offered an opportunity for Flordelisa to live, learn English, and earn a college degree. She graduated from Hunter College with a BA in English in 2005. She works at Hunter as a creative writer tutor.
