Book Details

So I Finally Wrote My Book is a heartfelt journey through time, family, perseverance and love. It chronicles the life story of a couple who understood the importance of service to country, to community and to family. After a ten year childless wait, the pair adopted Keith, Linda, Marianne, Shannon and Kirk, ages 12 through 6, from Toronto Canada. Five years later the couple was blessed by the birth of Jill and then Jane. Because of the age difference, in some ways it was like having two families, but it developed into one big happy group. The story is highlighted by the rare inclusion of both husband and wife voices. The collaborative narrative with Mary Lou provides perspective and depth. An unforgettable life story that reads like a warm conversation with an old friend, it is honest, funny and moving. From a family legacy viewpoint this memoir is a treasure.

Book Excerpt

Hi. My name is Hal Unger and I am 89 years old.  I always wanted to write and publish a book and after retiring  from my third career, I finally did it.  The book is called appropriately "So I Finally Wrote My Book".  It is an autobiography about my early years and then my life with my wife Mary Lou and our seven children, five siblings we adopted from Toronto Canada--Keith 12, Linda 10, Marianne 9, Shannon 7 and Kirk 6, and then two biological daughters--Jill and Jane.  Mary Lou collaborated on the book with me by doing all the editing and then adding many of her own comments to add a little more spice to the story.  The creative use of many Picture Pages throughout allows the reader to share special visial moments with the characters.  So far people who have read the book have really liked it. Here are a couple of comments.

"Good afternoon Mr. Unger.  Thank  you so much for reaching out, and congratulations on the publishing of your book "So I Finally Wrote My Book".  We love hearing from local authors.  And we're glad to hear that a former president of the Ocean County Historical Society has recorded his own experiences about Toms River.  We are pleased to inform you that the book has met the Ocean County Library's selection criteria and has been accepted into the collection.  We thank you for submitting your work."
Sincerely, The Author Submission Review Committtee of the Ocean County Library

"So I Finally Wrote My Book - With Many Comments from Mary Lou Unger" by Hal  Unger, is a collaborative memoir that chronicles the couple's life story. The author details several major obstacles his family overcame through perseverance.  The couple transitioned from being childless for ten years to raising five children overnight when they adopted five siblings from Toronto Canada.  Because their five adopted children werer significantly older (ages 6 through 12) than their biological daughters, born five and seven years after the adoption, the Ungers initially struggled with the feeling of managing two separate families. The age difference soon helped meld the group even closer....  According to the memoir and early 2026 reviews, the Ungers relied on several key philosophical and practical pillars:  patience and time, the power of resilience, a united parental front and a committment to service.... Ultimately, Hal views the family's success not to a stroke of luck but as a hard-won victory.
