Gene Michaels’ mistake almost cost him a “good thing.”
A three-person family can be likened to a three-legged stool or a tripod; the family members holding one another up. Remove one of those legs and that family can fall. Shirley Harper and daughter, Alice, had lost their husband and father unexpectedly, and struggled to remain upright without that third piece of the family. Gene Michaels was by all accounts “an okay guy” and was a welcome addition to the family. When he made an error in judgement, one that he certainly came to regret, he destroyed that new family tripod and almost ruined what he considered a “damn good thing.” In the end, all was made right—and that family was restored.
