Book Details

What do a pilot, a gun, and a deadly snake have in common?

When Michael Mitchell found himself stationed at Bien Hoa Air Base, he knew he’d be in for some scary, life-threatening experiences…and he was. But this book doesn’t focus on the fear and sadness of war. Instead, in the tradition of M.A.S.H., the stories invite the reader to share some of the lighter moments of Mike’s year-long stay in Vietnam. There’s a Foot In My Soup is filled with humorous tales of the do’s and don’ts of Vietnamese culture; big tough guys dropping like flies at the sight of the needle at vaccination time; and local hospitality that includes fried beetles and chicken feet. In “Welcome to the Hooch,” beetles the size of golf balls roam around at night and end up in the beds of unwitting newbies, and “Ho Ho Ho, Run For Your Life” is about a Christmas party gone hilariously wrong. With stories like “What Do You Mean It Rains Sideways?” and “VD Does Not Mean Very Delicious,” this book highlights the laughter and camaraderie that got these young soldiers through a war that was anything but lighthearted.
