Book Details

It’s 1901, and the largest surviving grove of California’s giant sequoia trees is in danger of being gobbled up by Stone Lumber Company. A surprised Stanford University botany professor, Aldous Barkly, is called upon to help save them. In the Redwood Grove is rooted in historical fact, with a twist. Aldous Barkly and Amelia Rough, the central characters, live in a world where dogs, properly known as canines, coexist on an almost equal footing with humans. California history, the wonder of the natural world and character driven action make In the Redwood Grove a book that middle grade readers and their parents will learn from and enjoy.

Book Excerpt

“You’ll never make it on the road,” said Murphy. “Stone’s got a gang of toughs that will be waiting for you as soon as you get out of earshot of Millwood. There’s only one way for you to get to Sanger, and that’s on the flume.” “The flume?” Trotter blurted. “You mean that overgrown horse trough that you float the lumber down to the Valley in? You expect us to ride down that thing like a load of cord wood?” Murphy looked Trotter straight in the eye. Even in the dark Trotter could see that he was deadly serious. “That’s exactly what I mean.”
