Do you like rocks? A day at the beach? Adventure? Making wishes come true?
It’s summer vacation and ten-year-old Kedge just wants to relax, sleep late, and enjoy a carefree day at the beach with his family. But his dad has different plans. He’s been away and wants a special day alone with his only child. Dad plans their first-ever father-son day at their favorite beach, from sunrise to sunset, scheduling every single minute of the longest day of the year—the summer solstice. Initially, Kedge is slow and tired and reluctantly goes along with Dad’s endless activities—sprinting to the dock, building a rock tower, riding the waves, and more.
Their day together takes on increasing importance to both of them after Dad shares an old family tradition of collecting wishing rocks—rare rocks, each with a white quartz line wrapped all the way around it. Kedge loves to make wishes and searches all day long to find his very own wishing rock. With Dad’s help, Kedge notices all sorts of new things about the beach they’ve been to many times before—sand dollar doves, mermaid’s purses, the sun, the moon, the tides, and more. Most of all, Kedge notices something’s not right with Dad. As the day progresses, Kedge realizes this day is much more special than he ever thought.
