In 1975, a professor turns a graduate student loose to roam Indonesia to track down lost manuscripts of a Eurasian poet and veteran of the British Invasion of Java, August, 1811.

As graduate student Desmond Javaleine, learns more about the corsair-scholar-poet, Alsandair I Dewa Deverell he becomes obsessively immersed those fragments extant, of his polylingual but incomprehensible writings, Professor Marcellanus Serrulaz encourages his student to journey to Singapore, and Indonesia, to see what he can learn. His arduous, multi-year efforts are ultimately so successful that student becomes master. The research journey of Desmond Javaleine leads to an uncanny landmark on Waigeo Island, in the Rajah Ampats, near New Guinea. Professor Serrulaz, meanwhile, apprehending his having been passed by, takes a dark turn. The question whether anyone can understand the writings of Deverell, and whether or not they had extraterrestrial influence, remains a constant.

Dwight Brooks

Independent novelist and scholar, Dwight Brooks holds six degrees in philosophy, English, writing, and comparative literature. He has an extensive background as an international mountaineer and jungle explorer. Ten years in Indonesia, in some of the most wild parts of the archipelago, enriched his experience. In addition, he took an interest in the colonial Dutch period and devoted decades to the Dutch language. He is known for gritty foreground action, resting on a foundation of scholarly knowledge, and sensitivity to cultural nuances of a more unusual kind.
