To jazz loving, romantically naïve Buddy Smithson, Cole Porter’s haunting lyric seems to evoke the dilemma in which he finds himself. When his best friend impulsively joins the Navy, he asks Buddy to take care of his fiancé while he is away, Buddy, uncommitted at the time, reluctantly agrees, but a few days later he meets Lexie, the vocalist with the college jazz band, and soon falls in love for the first time. Now he must divide his time between two beautiful women who are unaware of each other: one with whom he wants to spend his time and the other who becomes increasingly demanding. In spite of his best efforts and good intentions, Buddy’s life has taken a turn from good to terrible.. A chance encounter with a favorite college professor prompts Buddy to gamble his future on the validity of an old adage. Could a picture save the day for Buddy?
