“Dwarves and sorcerers!” Pablam said, shaking his head. “First I’m shot at, then insulted. Hwato manners have surely changed since I left.” He marched forward, but stopped as the bow snapped up. “I am Pablam, son of Fargam, who was Grandmaster of the Vales until his death in 2910 at the hands of the foul Berajard and their wolves.” The archer stared hard at Pablam for a long moment, then spoke again, his voice softened. “Truly— the missing son of Fargam Brownbee? Fargam was a good one; I liked the old gaffer, for he always had a kind word for me. Well now, you’re a hwato, that’s for sure, but I didn’t recognize you in those ridiculous clothes.” He lowered the bow and cast an odd look at Pablam. “I’m sorry for the loss of your father, he was a kind soul.” He called up to the pile of stones: “He seems to be what he says.”
