Book Details

Nova Scotia, Britain’s 14th colony, made every effort to join the bid for independence with the 13 colonies, but geographical distance and limited resources restricted participation. Colonists joined the Native American networks of trade and information that reached from Nova Scotia to the Spanish Colony of Florida. You witness George Washington as a child and a teenager. You ride along as he matures into adulthood and depends on the trade networks to gain a military and political advantage over the British Army. The novel illustrates how survival tools and techniques ensured his success and alludes to the Culper Spy Ring's adaptation during the American Revolution. Chief Guyasuta narrates passages from notebooks and journals. The story begins with George taking the presidential oath of office in New York City, then shifts to a clandestine meeting in the Wilds of Pennsylvania. Welcome to Boone Mountain.

The sculpture of Half-King is an inspiring artifact that draws you into the 18th-century colonies of Britain, France, and Spain as they battled for control of North America’s eastern seaboard. Half-King played a pivotal role. Survival dominated colonists’ lives, and they were not thinking about an American Revolution. The United States of America did not yet exist. Their western boundary was the Mississippi River, a French-controlled trade route between the Gulf of Mexico and New France (today’s Canada). Britain was desperate to take the trade route away from France and Spain. Colonists and fur traders from Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, and Virginia teamed with Native Americans to create trade and information networks that reached from Nova Scotia to the Spanish Colony of Florida. People in the wilderness lived under constant pressure to survive. What triggered the quest for freedom from the British Crown of King George II and the French Crown of King Louis XV?

About the Author

Lew Geoffrey Bennett

I am a Vietnam-era Army veteran with degrees from the University of Maryland, George Washington University, and George Mason University in Electrical and Computer Engineering. After 50 years of providing a wide range of professional services supporting our nation’s security, I retired to become a writer. I enjoyed condensing 6 years of research into a manageable outline for the novel. I turned the outline into a cogent non-fiction storyline, and then reality hit. One might say the story was like a taco without salsa; it failed to engage the imagination. It took over a year of learning plot-line analysis, character development, and narrative arc to put the salsa on the taco. My goal was to immerse you in the era’s pivotal events. Character introduction, the rise and fall of action, climax, resolution, and aftermath or reflection achieve that goal. Of course, the novel is now creative history. The stories that describe how the people of the wilderness built a nation will light up your imagination. You’ll meet an array of characters based on real people and authentic history. The truth is often stranger than fiction. Compatriot Lew Geoffrey Bennett
