One can imagine the joy with which at seven months gestation, this precious baby came into the part of the world that is now called Guyana. A boy, already determined, carrying in his own unique genes his rendering of the DNA of two proud and ancient lineages, Africa and South America (Akawaio), was set on a path of achievement lit by the unstinting love of his mother, Lena. The Reverend Dr. Andries did not set out to write an autobiography and, wonderfully, he has placed before us more than that. He has, using the eyes of his compatriots, colleagues, mentors, friends, relatives, daughter and son-in-law, explored the making of a human. Here is one who, with all the vicissitudes of life, has persevered and overcome the daily turn—the slings and arrows, the slippery stones and the sharp ones, rising with determination, propelled by love of those around him.
