What was “one green hell” in the jungles in 1942 is today merely a “tough walk in paradise”

They were known as "The Ghost Mountain Boys". In 1942 under General MacArthur’s orders an ill equipped 2nd Battalion of the US 126th Infantry Division of the 32nd “Red Arrows” battled their way on an ill-defined jungle track across the rugged Owen Stanley Ranges. They suffered terribly from the conditions during that march only to suffer even more in wrestling Buna on the Northern Beaches from the clutches of the Japanese. The jungle has changed little since WWII in most places along the Trail. However, without the depravation that war brings, and with the right preparation and guidance, those who travel The Kapa Kapa Trail today are rewarded with spectacular natural scenery and spontaneous cultural experiences that leave ever lasting memories. Described by 1st Sgt Paul R Lutjens of E Company as “one green hell” is now described by recent trekkers as either “Kokoda (Track) on steroids ..” or “a tough walk in paradise ..” This guide provides the history and the current day description of the Trail from the beginning at Gaba Gaba on the south coast to Buna on the north coast. It includes detailed maps and elevation profiles as well as information for all travellers planning to walk part or all of the Trail, or just visit one of the remote villages for a short stay.
