Growing up in Michigan in the 50’s and 60’s during the heyday of the automotive industry was really an exciting journey through the golden years. We lived in Flint, Michigan for the first 7 years of my life. Our large house in Flint held four families and it was in the shadow of the Buick Plant, literally one block away. My grandpa, dad, and uncles and eventually cousins, all worked in one plant or another. Flint was called Buick City back then and had a history of getting General Motors started. I went into the Navy for a couple of years vowing that I would never work as a shop rat. When I came home the only good paying jobs was that of a shop rat and that’s what I did for the next 35 years. My first job ever was as a packer at Wrigleys’ Supermarket in Burton Township, Michigan. I was a golf course caddie for a few years and joined the Naval Reserve at 16 (my mom had to sign for me). I was a typical in betweener in high school. Not part of the in crowd, geeks or hoods just in between. I dated and eventually married my high school sweetheart. Today I have 17 grandkids and always another one lined up. It may seem that my life sounds rather mundane but there is magic everywhere if you choose to see it.
