Book Details

This workbook asks readers to reflect on their own narratives and thoughts or beliefs surrounding specific areas in their lives that they struggle with. It also seeks to promote cross generation communication and understanding among immigrant communities and seeks to empower members of immigrant communities to push beyond personal, cultural, and societal barriers that seek to inhibit them from living their best lives.

Through self-reflection, mentoring, peer to peer support and discussion, one can eventually shed light on the subconscious narratives and beliefs that shape our everyday lived experiences, allowing us to Stand Out and Roar (SOAR) for what we believe our life narrative to be. We call it Stand Out and Roar because we want to see readers exercise courage to use their voice, courage to follow their dreams, and courage to live their best lives. We hope by reading the stories in Staring Down the Tiger: Stories of Hmong American Women, and completing the exercises in this workbook, readers will begin the process of staring down their tigers. Instead of running from their tigers, we want readers to stand out and roar.

About the Author

Pa Der Vang, Ph.D.

Hnub Tshiab: Hmong Women Achieving Together is an organization for Hmong women, led by Hmong women. We empower Hmong women by developing their leadership and by engaging families and communities in building insight and understanding about the changing dynamics of Hmong culture. We ask people to question social constructs around gender and gain insight around how social constructs impact our daily lives. Social constructs were built by humans; humans therefore have the power to deconstruct them. We assert that it is OK for Hmong women to focus on Hmong women and it is OK to talk about sexism and gender inequality in our endeavor to promote Hmong women’s autonomy and leadership. Vision: We envision a world where Hmong women and girls are valued and supported to achieve their highest potential in all of their roles. We see a society that honors the choices that Hmong women make and celebrates their ability to direct their own destinies.
