Book Excerpt

An Excerpt from Alexia's Dream

She found herself swimming in the Indian Ocean. All of a sudden, a huge wave came and pushed a bunch of broken glass bottles towards Alexia. “Help!” Alexia thought. “I don't want to be hit by the bottles. They don't belong here anyway.”
“Belong here anyway,” said a deep voice.
Alexia tried to pull herself above water so she could get away from the bottles, but for some reason she was stuck. Then she realized why. Along with all the garbage in the water, there would probably be a lot of oil. The oil was sticky, and it was holding her down. Also, even if there wasn't the oil, there was so much heavy trash around that she wouldn't have been able to get out. In the water, there were Doritos, Cheetos, and Fritos bags. A small wave came towards Alexia, carrying Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookie bags, Popcornopolis containers, huge, double pack Swiss-Miss cans, and Milky Way chocolate candy wrappers. Alexia was halfway surrounded in water and halfway surrounded in plastic peanut butter truffle wrappers, shreds of diet coke cans, cracked light bulbs, two new computers, a bunch of African Savanna Chewy Honey Snackimals, and a Skippy's three-gallon peanut butter jar. “With this much trash, how many fish can live?” Alexia wondered out loud.
“How many fish can live,” a voice repeated.
A huge area in the trash cleared. There many fish, sharks, and dolphins appeared. In real life she would never be able to guess, but in her dream she knew there were about 8,000 water dwellers. She also knew that these were all the vertebrates in the Indian Ocean, and there was something big wrong with that.
