Read with your students. Read together.

If I want to get good active reading and understanding from my students, any students, I need to use objects, props, something they can hold or touch or see or hear. There is something almost magical about reading when props are involved. The words on the page come alive. The setting appears all around us. The situations become real, as though we are experiencing them first-hand instead of simply reading words on a page. Our reading and our talk about our reading gains depth. We are able to think at a high level. Above all of that, true reading—with all of its wonder and joy and escape—happens. We are transported.
