Jim Higginbotham was born and raised in Texas City, Texas. He attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, with a degree in homebuilding. He moved to Dallas, Texas, and worked with youth in churches, led bible studies with young people for many years. He served as chairman of the advisory board for Project Craft (2004–2005) Youth Village, Dallas, and Homebuilders Institute, Washington D.C., which taught troubled youth home building skills. Jim and his wife Carol have three daughters, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
