The intercept message announced, “This line has been disconnected.” He tried twice more. The result was the same. Jon Levine, a Florida-based investment manager, and Dr. Alyssa Martin, his life partner, are unable to contact their friend, Matthew Johnson, an FBI agent who once tapped them for help in his cases. Failing to reach him by phone, they decide to fly to New York to visit him. There they discover there is no record of his ever having owned the apartment they once visited him in, now inhabited by a couple who claim to have lived there for twelve years. Subsequently, they receive a frightening call from an untraceable number, suggesting they stay out of Matthew’s disappearance and instead worry about their own health. The latest in the series of Levine and Alyssa’s escapades, Mexican Game acquaints us with two new remarkable and unorthodox characters: Trey Wilson, an FBI mole who has infiltrated the largest Mexican cocaine cartel, and Michael Dawson, Matthew Johnson’s young trainee. Together they orchestrate an elaborate and dangerous plan to avenge Matthew Johnson while decapitating the cartel. As with other Levine adventures, only one rule holds: Expect the unexpected.
