Book Excerpt

The soft breeze whispered to the trees as it passed through the silent forest surrounding a small village. The sun stretched its waking rays out to arouse the flowers and birds. The village rested as few people walked through the bare streets trying to set up before the sun got too hot. The breeze flowed through the open fields, waking the rest of the flowers, and then headed right into the thick forest behind the village. Deep into the forest was a collection of tree houses that were dark and empty as giant roars broke the silence of the forest.
Five dragons, last of their kind, came into view of the villagers as they took flight high into the sky then vanished again as they shot back down. One dragon was silver and made the other four dragons look tiny compared to its size. Spikes flowed down its back and across its chin. Her large light blue belly moved frantically as she tried to fly faster without jerking too much. Its body glittered in the bright rays of the sun as its horns turned up to greet the warmth. Her bright blue eyes reflected like the sun hitting the river for the first time of the day. The dragon smiled as it glanced back to a pregnant lady riding on its back with a huge smile. She had short dark hair and full of energy as she held her stomach with pride. She wore a long blue dress that flung around rapidly in the wind. With an excited smile, the lady bent down and tapped the dragon on the side. “Vaeri, let us go into the forest. Let me see how it looks in these wee hours of the day.”
The dragon laughed as she nodded. “Sure thing Electra.”
The lady held on the tough, rough scales of the dragon as it turned sideways then dashed into some trees. Electra laughed loudly as she ducked her head to avoid being hit. She breathed in deeply as the smell of fresh flowers filled the air.
Right behind the silver dragon was a black dragon with large horns and an evil smile that reached across its chubby face. Its violet stomach almost blended with its black skin. The sun seemed to disappear behind the large darkened dragon. Large horns wrapped down from the head to the chin. Smaller but thick spikes ran across its chin. On its back was a second lady with long and dark curly hair. She tucked her black and silver dress under her leg hoping it wouldn’t fly up as she reached over and held tighter onto the horns of her dragon. She laughed out loud as her dragon quickly turned to follow Vaeri. The lady hugged her dragon with love. “This is going to be so much fun Digine. Take after them.”
The dragon smiled as she dashed into the forest. “Sure is Cherri.”
The third dragon was light blue dragon with the middle of its belly being green. It had a long neck with a spiked mane all the way down the back of the neck. Its nose was flat with a single spike at the end of the chin. Its bright green eyes reflected the sun as they greeted each other. On its back was a pregnant woman with long red hair sitting in between two spikes. She wasn’t as far along as her sister, but she already hunched over from a hurting back. She smiled wide as she hugged her dragon. “Arunia, follow me sisters.”
The dragon nodded quickly as it moved to follow the others. “Anything you ask, Rasika.”
The fourth dragon was copper with a green belly and seemed to be a very proud flyer, as it seemed somewhat smaller than the other dragons. Its wings started at the shoulders then continued to its feet like a flying squirrel. This wingspan made it easy to drop and gain air quicker than the others. It moved quicker from side to side without hesitating. It dodged everything without skipping a beat. On its back was a fourth lady with her hair pulled back by a ribbon and almost lying down holding her stomach and smiling, “I love flying with you Trabria.”
The dragon smiled wide as it rolled its head to pop its neck. “I love spending time with you as well Tristlin.”
The dragon used its tail to hold Tristlin still as it made a quick movement to follow the others into the forest. Tristlin hugged her dragon tighter as she felt the tail hold onto her. She knew she was safe on her back.
The last dragon was red with a large chest and a single horn on the nose. Its ears fanned out and extended to the back of its jaw and three spikes stuck out from the end its chin. It rolled its blue eyes as the wind from the smaller made it harder to steer. Smoke rose from its mouth as it hiccupped then looked back to make sure its passenger was still fine. The lady had her hands extended out as the wind blew her long hair every which way. Her eyes were closed tightly as a smile remained on her face from excitement. The dragon seemed please to know her master was so happy. “Hold on, precious Drogo, we are heading into the forest.”
Drogo quickly touched her stomach then extended her arms once again without opening her eyes. “That is fine Grandale.”
Vaeri and Electra dashed out of the forest as Electra held her stomach while laughing. “That was amazing. I’m surprised I didn’t hit something. That would have hurt.”
Vaeri stopped in midair as she turned her body around and watched the others come out of the forest. A gust of wind made a faint wave in the puffy clouds surrounding them. Electra felt her stomach start tickling as the wind stopped and the ground remained still. She felt free when Vaeri stopped in midair. It seemed to relax her more than the flying. She closed her eyes for a moment and imagined herself in water. The cooling motions of the air calmed her like the rhythm of the sea.
Cherri was fixing her hair when she and Digine met back up with Electra and Vaeri. Digine made small adjustments in her wing pattern. Her black, scaly wings almost reminded Electra of an oversized bat.
The two sisters smiled as the third couple came out laughing from enjoyment as they dashed passed the first four and quickly turned around. Rasika held out her hand to Electra with a huge smile. “That was great!”
Electra held her sister’s hand while nodding. “It was.”
Tristlin had been laughing so hard that she had to wipe away the tears from her eyes when she met back up with her sisters and turned to watch for Drogo. Moments later the eight saw Grandale fly out of the forest and turn upside down as she fell to the ground and against a redwood tree.
Electra stood up so fast that she fell from Vaeri’s back and started falling through the air. Vaeri dashed after her and swooped under to catch her as the continued down to meet with Grandale. “What happened?”
Cherri was screaming as the group landed on the ground. “Drogo? Where is she? What happened? You need help! We need to help you! How can we help you!”
Tristlin and Rasika dashed closer to Grandale then suddenly stopped when they realized that Grandale was laughing so hard that she could not breathe. Rasika pushed back some of her red hair from her face. Her face was hot as her eyes searched the dragon’s body. “What is so funny? Where is me sister?”
Grandale used her head to point into the forest. Her deep voice echoed in the opened area. “I told her to duck and she looked up hoping to see a flying bird.”
Electra quickly turned and ran for the forest followed by her three sisters. She could feel the babies kicking her but she didn’t care. She thought something happened to Drogo. She was worried. Vaeri watched her sister dragons follow their ladies into the forest as she remained by Grandale’s side. Electra stopped when she finally found Drogo. Rasika covered her mouth as she started laughing and backed into Tristlin, whose jaw dropped from shock. Cherri shook her head in disbelief as she smiled wide. “I knew she was not all there.”
