Book Details

A Must-Have Handbook for Pianists and Organists!

The musically talented and creative Jerome Taylor is a native of Chicago Illinois born with an unparalleled musical talent and has spent a lifetime perfecting his God-given gift. He has served as a church musician, minister of music, music professor and has now added author to his list of accomplishments. Recognizing that many musicians need to and wish to be able to play traditional hymns and gospel songs but are not able to do so because of their inability to read music, Mr. Taylor has written a manual to enable these musicians in their work. The manual, “Modern Chord Changes to Favorite Hymns”
provides a vehicle for musicians to learn the chords and progressions that will revolutionize their ability to enhance their natural talent in music. The manual has been showcased at the prestigious Hampton University Ministers’ Conference and Choir Guild and the Gospel Music Workshop of America and was well received. The first printing of this valuable book was sold out in a matter of days upon its release!
Hailed as a “must have” handbook for today’s musician in the capacity of intermediate to advanced levels, “Modern Chord Changes to Favorite Hymns” has proven to be an asset for the keyboardist who finds it difficult to “figure out” the complex chord voicings and progressions in today’s Gospel and R&B music. Some of the hymns included are:
Holy, Holy, Holy....Battle Hymn of the Republic........Near The Cross .......My Faith Looks Up To Thee......Pass Me Not.....What A Friend We Have In Jesus......Amazing Grace...Have Thine Own Way and many, many others. All chords are spelled out for the Right Hand, Left Hand and Bass Pedal.

Book Excerpt

The purpose of this book is to explore some alternatives (harmonically) to the standardized structure of the hymnal, as we know it. I have been asked on so many occasions to explain or simply spell out some of the more intriguing chord voicings that one might hear me display when giving a lesson, for example.

About the Author

Jerome Taylor

Jerome Taylor began his music studies at the age of nine; and then went on to study at the American Conservatory of Music, in Chicago, Illinois. During this time he honed his keyboard skills at various churches and clubs throughout the Great Lakes area. In 1972 he entered the Armed Forces and served as Musical Director for the 101st Airborne Division Choir of Fort Campbell, Kentucky and then later was chief organist for the Frankfurt Church of God In Christ in Frankfurt, Germany. Upon completion of active duty in 1975, Mr.
Taylor engaged in extensive studio session work and also played piano and organ for the Ecclesiastes Community Choir of Chicago, Illinois.
In 1989, he moved to New York to further pursue his musical aspirations. Having studied with the likes of Jazz pianists Joanne Brackeen and Amina Claudine Meyers, he was able to further pursue his dream of being an accomplished accompanist and session musician. He also has taught hundreds of students his method of voicing chords and progressions. He continues to play for various churches, conventions and still in demand as a studio session keyboardist in the New York area.
