Into the Tunnel and Through the Woods is based, in part, on a true story that takes place in the windy city of Chicago. For Lilly, coming of age meant turning nine and being old enough to join the local boys’ and girls’ club. That day finally arrived. She patiently waited to hear her name called for she had dreamed of this moment since watching her friend’s induction ceremony two years earlier. She longed to fit in. Too often she had been shunned and made fun of by the other kids because she was different. Different in that she was much smaller and younger looking than the rest of her peers. But today would be different. Today she would belong and finally experience her first outing as a club member. What started out as a normal day, however, took a turn for the worse and the excitement soon faded away as she finds herself alone and fighting for her life. If all that wasn’t enough, Lilly learns from her parents that she was adopted as a baby. Lilly struggles with her own identity and is filled with uncertainty, anxiety, and questions trying to make sense of why her own birth mom would give her up for adoption until she meets Mary and her guardian angel... a discovery that will change the girls’ lives forever.
