Discipleship

As we live our busy lives, more and more of us are opting out of Sunday worship. Apathy, lack of interest, motivation, or schedule conflict makes it easier and normal for us to say, “I don’t go to church, but I have faith.” Or “I worship God in my own way!” And “I wish I could serve but I just don’t have the time”. How about worshipping in God’s way? As a priest once said, “Don’t say you don’t have enough time, rather say you don’t have enough love!” Even with enough love, some of us rush through the motions in order to fulfill our Sunday obligations while often counting the minutes to dismissal. We are not engaged! We don’t get it! We want to volunteer and do more but something else always takes priority. Interest is sparked when the Church invites us to ministry and service only to fizzle with the reality of our busy lives. Still there are those who serve the Church and are rewarded with the fulfillment of a life well lived.

About the Author

Gloria Scoyola

Gloria Villanueva Scoyola was born Catholic but walked away from the Church during the chaotic years of the 1960’s. She returned after her mother’s sudden death to find a church coming to terms with the changes made after the Second Vatican Council. She received a call to service and with the help of many pastors, and laity alike, immersed herself on all things Catholic. She earned a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies at the University of St. Thomas in Houston Texas and served at several parishes during her thirty years in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. She states, “I was away from my faith for twenty years and returned to find a church that had been patiently waiting my return. I am happy to share some of what I have learned, re-learned, and experienced as I endeavor in my collaboration with God to inch my way closer to heaven.”
