In 1982, Vajra Karuna officially took vows as a Buddhist layperson under the Venerable Karuna Dharma (1940-2014), Abbess of the International Buddhist Meditation Center of Los Angeles. She gave him his name, which means Diamond Compassion. In 2008, she bestowed on him the honor of making him her first heir—in short, a Zen master.
